Wyoming - To Obtain a new Driver License or identification Card

ProcedureEdit

You must appear in person at your local driver exam station to apply for a first-time Wyoming license or identification card.
You will be asked to surrender your out-of-state issued driver license and/or identification card when you apply for the Wyoming license, present a state-certified copy of your birth certificate (a valid US passport may be used in lieu of a birth certificate), present proof of your social security number, as well as present (2) forms of approved documents as proof of Wyoming residency. (See below for a list of approved SSN & residency documents.)
You are required to record your Social Security number on the application form.
Your Social Security number will not be displayed on the face of your driver license or ID card, but is required as part of the identity verification process.
If you were not born in the United States, you will be required to show proof of citizenship or present valid immigration documents.
You will be photographed and driver license applicants must complete a vision screening evaluation.
If you have any medical or vision problems, you may be asked to have your doctor complete a Medical Evaluation form and/or a Vision Evaluation form before you can be issued a driver license.
If you require that your license or ID card be mailed to you out of state, you must complete a "Forwarding Order" form.
If you have left the office and remember that you need to have your card mailed to a different address, then you must fax the "Forwarding Order" form to your local driver exam office (if the same day you were issued), or fax it to Driver Services in Cheyenne at 307-777-4803 (if later than the same day as you were issued).

Required DocumentsEdit

Valid U.S. passport or state-certified birth certificate
Proof of Social Security Number (W-2 form, IRS tax form, SSN card, etc.)
Two (2) current forms of proof of Wyoming residency (see below under Proof of Residency)
Proof of a name change (such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, etc.) if your name is now different or has changed from your birth certificate or U.S. passport.

Proof of Social Security Number

You are required to present (1) of the following as proof of your Social Security number:

Social Security card,
Bank Statement with your complete SSN on it,
W-2 form with your complete SSN on it, OR

Any other government or official document that displays your complete Social Security number.

Proof of Residency

You are required to present any two (2) of the below acceptable documents to prove you are a Wyoming resident:

Lease agreement, rent or utility receipt in your name with your residential address (NOT P.O. box #)
Proof of Wyoming voter registration
Vehicle registration form in your name with your Wyoming residential address (NOT P.O. box #)

An applicant for an original Wyoming driver license must be at least 16 years of age and have held a valid driving permit for a minimum of 6 months.

InstructionsEdit

If you have recently moved to Wyoming, you will need to apply for a Wyoming driver license in person.
You have one year from the time you establish residency to be issued a Wyoming driver's license, provided the license you currently have is not issued by one of the following states: Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin. These states are not part of the Driver's License Compact.
If you hold a license from one of these states, you must apply for a Wyoming license once you have established residency here.

Active-Duty Military

Active-duty military personnel and their dependents are not required to obtain a Wyoming driver license. Should you decide to apply for a Wyoming driver license, you must present all required documents as described above.
You are required to surrender your out-of-state issued license and present a state-certified copy of your birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
If you are not a dependent, you may want to have the expiration date of your license waived.
When you present your valid active-duty military ID card, your license will be issued with an "I" restriction that will waive the expiration date of your license when accompanied by active-duty orders or your ID card.

Commercial Drivers

Commercial drivers are subject to FMCSA regulations; therefore, you may required to present a current federal DOT Medical Certificate when applying for a Wyoming CDL license.
If your current CDL license includes a hazardous materials endorsement, you will be required to retake the hazardous materials written test.
If you want to add an endorsement when applying for a Wyoming CDL, you will be required to take both the written and driving-skills tests appropriate for the type of endorsement.
Driving skills tests for CDL drivers are scheduled ahead of time. The examiner will schedule it for you once you have paid the $40 skills test fee and passed any written testing.
Written tests are free of charge.
You must provide your own commercial class vehicle for the type of license you are seeking.

Testing

You may be required to take a written test and/or a driving skills test when applying for a first-time Wyoming driver license.
The driver examiner has the discretion to require either or both tests, based upon personal observation, medical or vision information and other factors.
When taking the driving-skills test, you should be prepared to test in a vehicle that is familiar to you.
The vehicle must be of the same class as the driver license you are applying for.
Driver Services does not provide any vehicles or motorcycles for testing purposes.
