Process of registration for a new SIM card

  1. Visit any mobile service provider office of your choice near to you with the required document and the recommended fee
  2. Approach the service desk and request for the application form, or download the application form from any service provider website portal of your choice ,read through the instruction carefully and fill it accurately
  3. Attach copies of the required document to the filled form and submit it to the attending official, who will verify and process your application then Pay the required SIM card fee
  4. The attending staff will then captured your photo and thumbprints then verified your ID via the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
  5. If all the information are in order who will be issued with the SIM card immediately, recharge and start using your SIM card

Process of replacement a lost SIM card:

  1. Go to the nearest police station to get a police report validating that you lost your SIM card
  2. Visit national identification registration authority(NIRA)offices near you with your identification documents
  3. Pay UGX.1,000 (Approx. Kes.30) via the bank
  4. Fill a form requesting SIM replacement at NIRA
  5. Wait five working days for your request to be processed
  6. Get a letter from NIRA directing your service provider to replace your SIM
  7. Visit your mobile service providerand fill a new SIM registration form and attach with the following requirements
    • Provide the SIM pack or other evidence of direct purchase/ownership. Where SIM pack is unavailable, a sworn affidavit attesting to ownership and loss is required.
    • Three (3) frequently-dialed numbers
    • Details of your last recharge activities.
    • An approved form of photo ID, defined as International Passport, Driver’s License, National ID Card, Voters Identification Card (NINs slip with ID number are also accepted).
  8. Pay UGX.2,000 (Approx. Kes.60) to your mobile service provider, the staff will then take your biometric information
  9. If all the information are in order you will Get your new SIM card having your initial personal number, recharge and start using your SIM card

Process of swapping a damage SIM card:

  1. Visit your service provider with the following requirements
    • Your damage SIM card
    • Valid Identification document
    • Three (3) frequently-dialed numbers
    • Details of your last recharge activities
    • Replacement SIM card fees
  2. Approach the services desk and fill in the application form accurately, submit it to the staff who will then verify and process your application
  3. Pay UGX.2,000 (Approx. Kes.60) to your mobile service provider, the staff will then take your biometric information
  4. If all the information are in order, you will be issued with a new SIM card having your initial personal number, recharge and start using your SIM card

SIM Swap through a Third Party
Where you are unavailable, an authorized representative can complete the SIM swap on your behalf.

This person requires the following:

  • A sworn affidavit by you detailing reasons for replacement, reasons for inability to carry-out replacement in person.
  • A copy of your ID
  • An approved photo ID of the authorized representative

Required DocumentsEdit

The only acceptable identification documents are;

  • National Identity Card for Ugandans.
  • Passport for foreign nationals
  • Registration documents from the office of the Prime Minister for Refugees.
  • Recent passport photograph (Please ensure that the quality of the photocopy or scanned copies is not blurry, faded, too light or dark.)

For companies/corporate institutions the following are required:

  • A formal letter on official company letter head, indicating all the phone lines, signed by an authorized signatory of the company, e.g. Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, or Chief Human Resources Officer. (The letter should be addressed to Head of Customer Service, Uganda Telecom Ltd)
  • A copy of Certificate of Registration/incorporation
  • A copy of memorandum of Association/understanding (MOU/MOA)

  • If it is damaged, stolen or lost
  • If it is obsolete (but eligible for replacement or an upgrade)
  • Any other legitimate reason or condition apart from those above.

SIM cards allow a mobile user to use this data and the features that come with them. Without a SIM card, some phones would not be able to make calls, connect to internet services such as 4G LTE or send SMS messages. SIM cards are removable and have anywhere from, 32KB to 128KB

Need for the DocumentEdit

SIM stands for subscriber identity module or subscriber identification module. It would then follow that a SIM card contains unique information that identifies it to a specific mobile network, which allows the subscriber (like you) to use the communication features of the device
