Address ChangeEdit

In Texas, the address on a driver license and ID card must be changed within 30 days after moving to a new residence.
There are three ways to request a replacement driver license with a new address:

  1. Online
  2. Mail-In
  3. In-Person


Name ChangeEdit

Individuals who want to change their name must:

  1. Visit any driver license office within 30 days of the change; and
  2. Provide a document that verifies the name change. The document must be an original, not a copy. If the document is not in English, then a certified English translation must also be submitted with the original.


Marriage-Related Name ChangeEdit

If a name change is marriage related, bring one of the following documents:

  1. Marriage license
    Since the state of Texas does not recognize same-sex marriage DPS cannot accept same-sex marriage licenses.
  2. Divorce decree
  3. Spouses death certificate


Other Types of Name ChangeEdit

If a name change is not marriage related, bring one of the following documents:

  1. Certified court order
  2. Amended birth certificate


Sex ChangeEdit

A transgender person must bring an original certified court order verifying the change.

  • Marriage-Related Name Change, if your name change is marriage related, bring one of the following documents:
    • Marriage license
    • Divorce decree
    • Annulment
    • Department of State Health Services marriage verification letter
  • Other Types of Name Change, if your name change is not marriage related, bring one of the following documents:
    • Certified court order
    • Amended birth certificate


Gender Change
To change your gender, you must bring an original certified court order or an amended birth certificate verifying the change.

EligibilityEdit

To change your address online:

  1. Your driver license and ID card are not expired. If one or both are expired, you can only change your address if you also renew at the same time.
  2. You have a Class C or CM driver license. You cannot use the online services to change your address on a Class A, Class B or commercial driver license.
  3. You are at least 18 years of age and your driver license is not a provisional or learner license.
  4. You are younger than 79 years of age.
  5. Your driver license is valid (not suspended or revoked).
  6. Your Social Security Number is already on file.
  7. You are a U.S. citizen.

Apply Online

Have all of the following items ready before you use the online service:

  1. Your current ID card/driver license ;
  2. A printer to print your temporary driver license and payment receiptit will not be emailed to you;
  3. A valid credit card: MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express only;
  4. The last four digits of your Social Security Number.
