In each canton there is a Road Traffic Office. The Road Traffic Offices are responsible for driving licenses, license plates and vehicle taxes.

Need for the DocumentEdit

An International Driver's License allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle in a country other than the one who issued the permit. This document must be accompanied by a valid license from the home country to be valid.

An IDL is usually slightly larger than a standard passport and translated in multiple languages of the holders normal driver's license.


Driving Abroad

Most European countries accepts the Swiss credit-card format driving licence. If you still have an old paper driving licence, you can simply exchange it to a credit card format at your cantons road traffic office.

Possesing an international driving licence is recommended when driving in countries outside Europe. An international licence is highly recommended when driving in certain countries, such as Albania, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. In other countries international driving license is mandatory. Many car rental firms also require you to have an international driving licence.

You may ask your travel agent or the consular service of your destination country which driving documents are required.

Foreign Driving Licences

If you hold a foreign driving licence you may drive a vehicle in Switzerland for up to a year as long as you are old enough to drive in Switzerland (18 years) and hold a valid national or international driving licence.

If you live in Switzerland for more than 12 months, you must convert your foreign driving licence into a Swiss licence. You must apply to convert your licence before the 12 months are up.
