ProcedureEdit

  1. Complete the form Application for alien's passport and temporary alien's passport, no 157011. To download the form, click here: http://www.migrationsverket.se/download/18.5973fd1412535304f668000100/fp_157011_en.pdf.
  2. Apply in person at any of the Swedish Migration Board permit units by submitting your completed application form. If you wish to apply for a passport in Solna or Norrkping, you must book an appointment in advance. If you wish to hand in your application at another unit, you can not book an appointment in advance.
  3. Submit other required documents.
  4. After submitting your application and it is considered, the Swedish Migration Board will obtain information from the police criminal records.
  5. Have your photograph and fingerprints taken.
  6. Pay the fee upon collecting the travel document.

EligibilityEdit

A temporary alien's passport can be issued to the following:

  • for a foreign citizen who lives in Sweden and has no possibility of applying for a country of origin passport or other acceptable travel document in Sweden should be able to apply for a passport abroad. A temporary alien's passport is only issued if there is a travel plan that shows "when, where and how" a country of origin passport is to be obtained outside Sweden.
  • for a foreign citizen without a passport who lives in Sweden so he or she immediately will be able to travel abroad for a humanitarian urgent purpose.
  • for a foreign citizen currently outside his/her country of origin who may be granted a residence permit for reasons of family ties but has no passport documents that are acceptable in Sweden to be able to travel here. The same applies when a foreign citizen in the same situation is refused a passport by the authorities in his/her country of origin for reasons that are, in our opinion, unacceptable.
  • for a foreign citizen with a residence permit in Sweden who is currently abroad, although not in his/her country of origin, that has lost an alien's passport or travel document and who needs a travel document for the return journey to Sweden.
  • for a foreign citizen without a residence permit who voluntarily wants to return to his/her country of origin.
  • for a foreign citizen who does not get an alien's passport or travel document due to the misuse of a previously issued document for traveling or a serious crime but who needs to make an urgent journey.

ValidityEdit

A temporary alien's passport is valid for a maximum of seven months. It can be for a single journey to or from Sweden or for a journey in both directions.

  • The applicant must check first if the temporary alien's passport is accepted in the countries you plan to travel or go to.
  • The applicant should make sure that the application form is complete and have enclosed all the necessary documents.

  • The temporary alien's passport must be returned to the Swedish Migration Board after the journey and it its destroyed after.
  • The Swedish Migration Board's decisions on aliens' passports cannot be appealed.
