  • Apply for a South Dakota Motorcycle Restricted Minor Permit at any exam station within the state.
  • Take the necessary vision, knowledge and driving test.
  • When you have successfully completed all required testing, your photograph will be taken and you will be issued Motorcycle Restricted Minor Permit.

If you have never held a South Dakota or out-of-state driver license, you will have to provide the following documents: proof of your identity (if your name is different than the name on your identity document, you will need to bring additional proof of your legal name), date of birth, and lawful status, proof of your Social Security number, and two documents to prove your principle address. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will be required to present a Naturalization and Immigration record authorizing your legal presence in the United States. InstructionsEdit

  • To obtain a Motorcycle Restricted Minor's Permit, you must be at least 14 years of age and pass the vision, knowledge (car/truck and motorcycle), and motorcycle drive tests, complete the requirements of the Instruction Permit, and have not been convicted of a traffic violation during the past 6 months prior to obtaining the Motorcycle Restricted Minor's Permit.
  • An individual up to 18 years of age may hold a Motorcycle Restricted Minor's Permit.
  • The permit is valid for 5 years

Restrictions: Entitles the holder, while having the permit in his immediate possession, to operate a motorcycle during the hours of 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. if the motorcycle is being operated with the permission of the minor's parent of legal guardian.
