Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Obtain Seafarer Accident Insurance, the applicant must go to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) office Contact Link
2. The insurance application form must be obtained from the authorities at the SAMSA office.
3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
4. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents, it must be submitted to the respective official at the SAMSA.
5. After verifying the medical condition and insurance related details, if the eligibility and insurance claiming requirements are fulfilled, then the insurance will be approved by the SAMSA.
6. After approval the applicant will be issued with the “CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE OR OTHER FINANCIAL SECURITY” with the details of the insurance approval.
7. There is no application fee for claiming the seafarer insurance.
8. Each step of the application process will be updated timely to the applicant.

Eligibility

The insurance can be obtained if the Seaman in injured or in case of the death of the Seaman, the immediate family member of the Seaman is eligible to obtain the Seafarer Accident Insurance.

Fees

There is no application fee for claiming the seafarer insurance.

Validity

The validity period of the seafarer insurance will be mentioned in the Insurance certificate issue to the applicant.

Need for the Document

The Seamen Accident Insurance helps the Seaman in covering the medical expenses and the compensation caused due to the accident happened at the workplace. The insurance can either be claimed by the applicant or the immediate family member by submitting the supporting documents.
