South Africa - How To Personalise your Motor Vehicle Number Plate

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for personalising number plate of your motor vehicle, the person who wants to do so should visit the nearest Registering authority in his/her province.
  2. The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest Municipality in your location.
  3. Contact the Municipality and get contact details about nearest Registering authority according to your location.
  4. Visit the nearest Registering authority and obtain the Application for personalising number plate of your motor vehicle, from the respective department.
  5. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  6. Now, complete the application form with appropriate information about the applicant. If the application is filled for an organisation, the particulars of the organisation’s representative and proxy must also be filled, under the relevant sections.
  7. Then, fill the Number Plate requirements and after completing, attestation by the applicant should be done below the declaration with date and name of the applicant.
  8. Also, pay the prompted fees at the office and submit the application package to the concerned authority at the Registering authority, along with all the required documents.
  9. After submission, the authority will check for legibility of the application and the validity of the attached documents.
  10. If the application information and all the documents are found in order, a Personalised Number Plate will be issued to the applicant with prior intimation.

  • Affidavit confirming the applicant’s residence (in case of lack of utility account)

InstructionsEdit

  • Please indicate the required layout (including space if personalized license number) of the preferred number plate on Annexure A1 or A2.
  • If no indication is given of the number plate sizes, and the preferred delivery point, the current standard number plates will be sent to the nearest delivery point nearest to your street address.
  • Your chosen name/number may not exceed 7 characters (excluding the provincial mark) and must comply with the requirements of a normal number plate (e.g. it must display the logo of the province) and be displayed in the same manner as the normal number plate. The name/number you use will not be duplicated by someone else.
