Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for an Exemption from Loss of Citizenship in person, the applicant must visit any nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs or any South African Embassy, mission or consulate if you are overseas.
  2. Please click on the following link for the contact details and address of the office of Department of Home affairs:Link Among the list of provinces, click on your province name and get the details accordingly.
  3. Go to the office of DHA and obtain the application form (DHA-1666) to apply for an Exemption from Loss of Citizenship of South Africa and an application form (DHA-529) for Determination of Citizenship Status in South Africa, from the concerned department.
  4. The application forms can also be downloaded by the following links:DHA-1666 -Link ,DHA-529 - Link
  5. The applicant will have to complete both the application forms obtained from the office to apply for an exemption from loss of citizenship.
  6. Fill the relevant sections of the forms with appropriate details of the applicant and provide the proper reasons for the application of exemption.
  7. Make sure that you have all the documents listed under the “Required documents” section of this page.
  8. Once completed filling the application form, submit it along with all the required documents at the respective department in the office. Also pay the prompted fees at the office.
  9. The submitted form and attached documents will be put into necessary verification processes by concerned authorities.
  10. Once when all the processes are done and the reason stated is found sufficient, the Minister of Home Affairs will make the necessary amendments for the exemption of Loss of South African citizenship.

EligibilityEdit

  • Persons, who have lost their South African citizenship by acquiring the citizenship of another country before 6 October 1995, may apply for exemption from the loss.
  • The applicant must possess a valid SA passport or any Identification document.
  • The applicant must any document or certificate that confirms the way and time period in which the foreign citizenship had been granted to the applicant.

  • Most applicants would have some form of naturalisation or registration certificate that was issued to them.
  • If this is not available or has been lost or stolen, then a letter from the country of which the applicant holds citizenship must be submitted, this letter should confirm how and when the applicant acquired foreign citizenship.
  • In the form BI-1666, the particulars like personal details, identification document number of the applicant, particulars in respect of other citizenship and reason for the application for exemption must be present.
  • In the form BI-529, the particulars of the applicant, Marital status of the applicant and the particulars of applicant’s Parents are to provided.
