South Africa - How To Apply for a professional driving permit

Apply In-Person:
- To apply for a Professional driving permit, the person who wants to apply should visit the nearest Driving License Testing Centre (DLTC).
- The contact links for each province in South Africa are listed in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page. Please click the link of your province and look for a nearest DLTC according to your location.
- Visit the nearest DLTC and obtain the application form to apply for a Professional driving permit (PD1) from the respective department. Else, click on the following link to download the application form: Link
- Please fill the application carefully with required details. Fill the part A with details of the applicant like name, contact information, address information and so on.
- In the part B, mention the category of license that you want to apply for and fill other fields. Also fill in the required details in part C and read carefully the Declaration part or part D of the form before attesting the application form with place and date.
- Also, complete the notification of change of address or particulars of person or organisation (NCP) form, at the DLTC premises.
- Then, submit both the application forms along with the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page at the concerned department in the DLTC.
- An eye test for the applicant will be conducted at the testing centre. Then, you will have to pay the prescribed fees for the application, as prompted.
- After payment, you will be referred to the nearest police station to request a conviction report. If the DLTC has a live capturing unit (LCU), the report will be sent electronically to the police station.
- Once the Professional Driving Permit card (PrDP) is ready, the applicant will be intimated to visit the DLTC with an Identification document and collect the PrDP card.

The National Traffic Information System of South Africa instructs only Gauteng residents to apply online for their Profession Driving Permits.
- The link of online portal for Profession Driving Permit application is as follows: Link
- Visit the link and click on “Book now for PrDP Application” option.
- You will be redirected to a page where you can apply for a PrDP test. In that page, you will have to fill all the fields under the tab “Identify Driver”.
- Then click on “Next” button to proceed. In the further steps, do as directed and schedule a date and time for PrDP Application.
- Then submit your application and pay the prompted fees. So, your application for booking a date for PrDP Application will be put into necessary processes and after that, you will be informed of the date and you will receive a receipt for the payment you made.
- Visit the DLTC on the prescribed date with the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page at the concerned department in the DLTC.

EligibilityEdit
- The applicant must have a valid driving license for the vehicle type that he wants a PrDP for and must have an assured medical fitness certified by a doctor.
- If the license is needed for vehicles of category D (transporting dangerous goods), the applicant should have been certified by an approved training body and should not have recorded in charge of any criminal offence of which violence was an element.
- The applicant should not have recorded in charge of any criminal offence like drunk and drive or drive under influence of narcotic drug.
- The applicant’s driving licence should have never been suspended and he\she should have never been convicted of a criminal offence or paid an admission-of-guilt fine.

- Please find the appropriate municipality under your province to get the contact details accordingly from the links provided. With the help of the contact details, you will get to know the nearest testing centre for license.
- The centre can be contacted for exact fees details for application of license test and also issuing fees of license cards.
- Please confirm with the DLTC that how many photos they require before you have photos taken.
- The applicant may have an eye test performed by a qualified optometrist and submit the form at the testing centre.
- As the operator or owner of the motor vehicle for which a PrDP is required, you may not let another person drive the vehicle on a public road unless they have a valid PrDP for the appropriate category.
- Please collect the card from DLTC as soon as possible or within 120 days after getting intimation. Any card not collected within 120 days will be destroyed.
