South Africa - How To Apply for a new firearm licence

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a Firearm license in person, the person who needs a license for firearm should visit the office of South African Police Service or any nearest Police station.

  3. Visit the office of SAPS or any nearest police station and get the application form (SAPS 271) to apply for a new Firearm license from the respective department. The application can also be downloaded by clicking the following link: Link
  4. Fill the application as required with all the relevant details in the relevant sections that are to be filled by the person who needs the Firearm license.
  5. Once completed, the applicant should submit the form to the Designated Firearm Officer (DFO) along with all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  6. Then, the DFO will capture a complete set of your fingerprints on the Fingerprint form (SAPS 91(a)). The applicant will be issued with a remittance advice (SAPS 523(a)) by the DFO and he/she is required to visit the financial office at the police station for paying the fees for the process.
  7. Get the receipt of proof (Z263) for the payment made, from the financial office and submit it to the DFO which will serve as a proof of payment and make the DFO proceed the application process.
  8. On receipt of the payment proof, a signed acknowledgement will be issued as a proof for submission of your Firearm license application.
  9. After successfully considering your application, the DFO will intimate you to get and install a firearm safe that satisfies the standards set by the South African Bureau of Standards, within 14 days.
  10. After that, the DFO will arrange an inspection over your premises to confirm whether a firearm safe has been set up meeting all the security standards.
  11. Upon receipt of the success report about the inspection of the firearm safe, your printed license will be sent to the DFO who will issue it to you after getting you signed as a proof of license receipt, on the SAPS 86 register.

  • The person applying should be 21 years or older and should be a South African citizen or a permanent South African resident.
  • The applicant must have undergone a proper training at an accredited institution and must possess a Proficiency certificate.
  • Also, he/she should possess a valid Competency certificate issued on the basis his/her Training proficiency certificate.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • Owning a gun in South Africa is not a right preserved by the Constitution of South Africa but you can legally own one with an authorized license.


Information which might helpEdit

  • You can only buy a firearm from a registered dealer.
  • You need to report a lost, stolen firearm or damaged documents to the police within 24 hours.
  • You may only own 200 rounds of ammunition for each firearm.
  • You can only have ammunition that’s suitable for that firearm (this doesn’t apply to dedicated hunters or sports shooters).
  • Never leave another person in possession of your firearm unless authorized to do so by SAPS.
  • You must renew your new firearm license and corresponding competency certificate 3 months before it expires.
