South Africa - Get Permit to Import Fresh Meat

Apply In-Person:
- To apply for getting permit to import fresh meat in person, the applicant has to visit the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate of South Africa.
- The details of the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate can be found in the following document: Link
- Visit the office and get the application form to import/move in transit meat into/through the RSA as applicable to you from the Import Export Policy Unit.
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
- Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
- Then, proceed to submit the package to the Director of Animal Health at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
- You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address of the Directorate of Animal Health.
- After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will issue a veterinary import permit and a veterinary health certificate template.
- This veterinary health certificate template should be used while completing a veterinary health certificate by the veterinary authorities in the exporting country before the product is shipped.

EligibilityEdit
- Any person living in South Africa, who wants to import fresh meat from other countries, can apply.
- Veterinary import or in transit permits for fresh (raw) meat will only be issued for countries where evaluation and approval of veterinary services and animal health status have been done.

ValidityEdit
Veterinary import permits are valid for a limited period and one consignment only.

Processing TimeEdit
Once the state veterinarian at the national office has approved the importation, it takes three to five working days to process the application and issue the permit.

- There are import protocols in place that are specific to individual countries based on the products and the animal health situation there. As the health requirements change often, please contact the Directorate: Animal Health (telephone: 012 319 7420 /7524 /7700, fax 012 329 6892) to obtain the latest requirements.
- If the products are in transit through the Republic of South Africa, you must submit a copy of the veterinary import permit from the country of final destination with the application for a South African veterinary in-transit permit.
- You must obtain a veterinary health certificate from the veterinary authorities in the exporting country before the product is shipped.
- This health certificate must comply with the conditions stipulated in the South African veterinary import permit or must have been negotiated between the veterinary authorities of South Africa and the exporting country.

Need for the DocumentEdit
If you want to import fresh (raw) meat (including offal) into the Republic of South Africa, or move such meat in transit through the country, legislation requires you to apply for and be granted a veterinary import permit or in transit permit from the Director: Animal Health. You must obtain this permit before the consignment leaves the exporting country.
