Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for getting permit to import fish on a Commercial basis in person, the applicant has to visit the office of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
  2. You can find the address and contact details of the DAFF can be found in the “Office Locations & contacts” section of this page.
  3. Visit the office of the DAFF and get the application form for permit to import fish on a commercial basis from the Fisheries Management Branch.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
  6. Then, proceed to submit the package to the relevant authority at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
  7. You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
  8. After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will proceed to make the issuance process permit.

  • Any South African with a valid Identity document, who wants to get permit for importing fish on a commercial basis, can apply.
  • If the applicant is a company or close corporation, it should have registered properly in terms of the legislation for companies and corporations.
  • The product to be imported must be compliant with the restrictions and conditions set by the Department.

If a South African citizen wants to import marine fish for profit he/she must apply for a permit to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in a prescribed format and obtain the permit as directed.

  • You may only import frozen whole crab (or pieces) weighing 600 g or more each and no more than 25 tons may be imported annually. No live crabs, edible and certain rock lobster species can be imported.
  • Please note that, failure to adherence to permit conditions set by the Department may result in the suspension or cancellation of the permit.
