Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for getting permit to import animals for specific purposes in person, the applicant has to visit the office of Directorate of Animal Production.
2. You can find the address and contact details of the Directorate of Animal Production office can be found in the “Office Locations & contacts” section of this page.
3. Visit the office of the Directorate of Animal Production and get the application form to import/export animals for certain purposes, from the relevant department.
4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
5. Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
6. Then, proceed to submit the package to the relevant authority at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
7. You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address of the Registrar office of Animal Improvement.
8. After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will issue an animal improvement permit.
9. After that, you must apply for a veterinary import permit at the Director of Animal health as instructed by the officials.
10. Once you have obtained both the permits, you will be eligible to import animals for specific purposes.

• The person applying should possess necessary documentations required for the processes as requested by the department.

Instructions

• Payments can also be made at the offices of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Ensure you obtain a receipt of payment as no application will be processed without proof of payment.

• Reference must be your name and surname. In cases where you are applying on behalf of someone else, please make sure that you pay in the name of that person or the company’s name.

• The applications should be lodged 30 days before importing.

• The applicant must also apply for a veterinary import permit from the Directorate Animal Health and a veterinary health certificate from the exporting country, as a part of the application process.

Need for the Document

If you want to import or export animals temporarily into or out of South Africa for specific purposes such as shows, exhibitions, competitions and stud mating or veterinary services, you must apply for and be granted an animal improvement permit from the Registrar of Animal Improvement.

• You are responsible for bank charges as well as the foreign bank charges. The Department will not issue a permit if the full fee is not received.
