Apply In-Person:
- To apply for getting permit to import animals and genetic material in person, the applicant has to visit the office of the Registrar of Animal Improvement.
- You can find the address and contact details of the Registrar of Animal Improvement can be found in the “Office Locations & contacts” section of this page.
- Visit the office of the Registrar and get the application form for permit to import animals and genetic material as applicable to the type of permit that you want, from the relevant department.
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
- Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
- Then, proceed to submit the package to the relevant authority at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
- You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address of the Registrar office of Animal Improvement.
- After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will proceed to make the issuance process of permit.

- The applications should be lodged 30 days before importing.
- To import an animal, the applicant must obtain a DNA certificate from a recognised registrar in the country where he/she is importing the animal from.
- The registrar in the country (from which the product is imported) must give you a DNA certificate of the animal that used for fertilisation of that embryo. You cannot test the embryo in South Africa.
- In case of importing genetic material, you need to hire genetic material import agent to collect, label and mark the genetic material you want to import. And also a DNA certificate has to be obtained from the concerned country.
- In order to import poultry or fertile eggs, the applicant must write a motivation letter to the Director: Animal Health. The letter must state reasons why you want to import eggs and poultry into South Africa.
- Also, foreign supplier must issue a certificate for the poultry or eggs confirming the generation status of those eggs and poultry.
