Apply In-Person:
- To apply for getting permit to import Animal Vaccines in person, the applicant has to visit the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate of South Africa.

- Visit the office and get the Application form for permit to import Animal Vaccines into the RSA as applicable to your requirement, from the relevant department. Or click here to download: Link
- Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
- Complete the form as required with relevant details under respective sections. After completing the application form, attach the required documents with the completed form.
- Then, proceed to submit the package to the Director of Animal Health at the office in person for further processes. Make the necessary payment as directed.
- You can also submit the application package through post to the postal address or fax to the fax number or email to the email address of the Import Export Policy Unit of the Animal Health Directorate.
- After all the processes have got completed, the concerned authorities will issue a veterinary import permit.

- Any person living in South Africa, who wants to import, distribute or sell animal vaccines from other countries, can apply.
- The person applying must have already registered or obtained permission for the animal vaccine that needs import permit.
FeesEdit
The fees for applying for an import permit of Animal Vaccines is R180.00
ValidityEdit
This import permit is valid for a limited period and for one consignment only.

Processing TimeEdit
Once the state veterinarian at the national office has approved the importation, it takes three to five working days to process the application and issue the veterinary import permit.

- Please state on the application form whether the permit will be collected or should be mailed to you.
- If you want to import an unregistered vaccine for a trial in South Africa, you need two permits. One permit must be obtained from the Registrar of Act 36 of 1947 and the other from the Directorate of Animal Health.
- The application for the permit from the Registrar of Act 36 of 1947 must be accompanied by the complete proposed trial protocol.

You may only import, distribute or sell vaccines for use in animals in South Africa once the vaccines have been registered in terms of the Fertilizers, Farms Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act.

- In an emergency situation where an outbreak of a disease occurs and no registered vaccine is available in the country, it may be a necessary to use an unregistered vaccine.
- In that case you, as a prospective importer, must apply to the Medicines Control Council for an exemption in terms of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act. You also need an import permit from the Directorate of Animal Health for the vaccine to enter the country.
- This import permit is issued only once you have obtained approval from and submitted proof to the Medicines Control Council. In this case, the unregistered vaccine may be sold for a limited period until registration has been obtained.
