Procedure

Apply Online:

1. To Apply for Registration of Copyright in Cinematograph Films, the applicant must go to the online portal of Companies and Intellectual Property Commission’s (CIPC) page linked here. Contact Link
2. On the given page, the applicant must select the “Click here” option under the “Register as a Customer” menu. (If the applicant is a first-time user)
3. On the next page select “Click here” option under “Create a new customer code”.
4. On the following page, the applicant must select the “Customer Registration” option on the left side menu of the page. Registration page link
5. The applicant needs to enter all the required details, and create the customer registration credentials.
6. Using the login credentials, the applicant must next pay the deposit fund of R510.00 on the CIPC banking page.
7. Then the application form must be downloaded from the CIPC official website.
8. All the application forms must be filled and then it must be uploaded on the webpage.
9. The application will be submitted, and the officials at the CIPC will verify the application for Copyright registration.
10. All the copyright applications are verified and approved once in every six months.
11. After allocating the application number, the application will be verified in 1 day, and the copyright registration certificate will be issued to the applicant in another 2 working days.

Validity

• For sound recordings, the copyright lasts for 50 years from the day the work was first broadcasted.
• For films, 50 years from the date the film was shown.
