Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Liquor license, the applicant should visit the Liquor Board office in the respective province in South Africa. Contact Link
  2. Before lodging the liquor license application, the applicant must give notice about the liquor license application in the government gazette 2 weeks prior to the date of submission.
  3. The application form must be obtained and submitted in the Liquor Board, where the applicant intends to open the liquor business.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The application form should be filled with necessary details, and then it should be submitted along with the required documents to the authorities in the Liquor Board office.
  6. After submitting the application, the applicant must post the advertisement about the liquor license in the local newspaper.
  7. After that, the application will be sent for verification to the Inspectorate in the liquor board.
  8. Further, the documents and the application will be verified by the Local Committee and the approval recommendation will be forwarded to the Liquor Board.
  9. Finally, the Liquor Board will approve the Liquor License application, if all the documents are legitimate.
  10. If the license if approved, then the applicant must pay the license fee, and then can proceed with the liquor business in the intended location.
  11. If any of the authority did not approve the application, then the license will not be granted to the applicant.
  12. If the application is rejected for any reason, then the applicant cannot file new application for 1 year from the date of refusal.
  13. The fee details will be provided depending on the type of application while submitting.
  14. The processing time for approving the Liquor license is approximately 3 months from the date of submitting the application.


Note: The liquor license must be filed only on the First Friday of every month.

EligibilityEdit

  • Any individual who is domiciled in South Africa, and also should not have any criminal record, should not be insolvent or a minor to file the liquor license application.

ValidityEdit

  • The liquor license is valid for one year from the date of issuance. The license must be renewed annually by the license owner.

InstructionsEdit

  • The liquor license will not be issued to the applicant without the certifications namely,
    • “Certificate of Fire and Safety”
    • “Certificate of Acceptability”.
  • These certificates can only be received once shop fitting has been completed.
