Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Customs and Excise Duty License, the applicant must go to the South African Revenue Services office. Contact Link
  2. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the SARS office, or else it can also be downloaded from the official website linked here. Application Form Link
  3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the necessary documents, it must be submitted to the officials at the customs department in SARS office.
  5. The application will be verified by the SARS officials for the license requirements and eligibility.
  6. After complete verification if all the details and documents provided by the applicant are legitimate then the Customs and Excise Duty License will be approved by the SARS officials.
  7. There are no fees for the license registration.
  8. The processing time to get the Customs and Excise duty license is approximately between 5 and 21 working days.


Apply Online:

  1. To Apply for Customs and Excise Duty License, the applicant must go to the South African Revenue Services’ (SARS) e-Filing portal website. Contact Link
  2. On the given link, the applicant must register themselves by entering the necessary details asked on the webpage.
  3. After registering, the applicant must “Login” with the newly created “Username and Password”
  4. If already registered in SARS, the applicant can directly “Login” using the Login credentials.
  5. The accounts page will open, and the applicant must follow and answer the prompts of all the pages of the registration.
  6. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  7. After entering all the necessary details and the supporting documents, the online application must be submitted on the portal.
  8. The application will be verified by the SARS officials for the license requirements and eligibility.
  9. After complete verification if all the details and documents provided by the applicant are legitimate then the Customs and Excise Duty License will be approved by the SARS officials.
  10. The fee details of the license application will be intimated to the applicant while applying.
  11. The processing time to get the Customs and Excise duty license is approximately between 5 and 21 working days.

  • A document confirming the banking details of the bank account, which can be:
    • A bank certified original bank statement or a legible bank certified copy of an original bank statement.
    • A bank certified auto bank statement.
    • An original letter from the bank on an official bank letterhead.
  • The original or a certified copy of:
    • A municipal account, fixed line telephone or cellular phone account or any other monthly account or statement.
    • A telephone or cellular phone account issued to the applicant to confirm the applicant’s telephone or cellular phone contact details
  • If the applicant is a juristic entity, a certified copy of the founding document or any certificate issued in terms of the laws of the Republic or of another country certifying that the applicant is incorporated, registered or recognised in terms of the laws of the Republic or that other country.
  • A certified copy of the identification document or passport proving identity and citizenship:
    • Authorised officer of the applicant, if not already provided
    • A certified copy of the court order in the case of the applicant being an emancipated minor.
  • If the applicant applies for registration as an agent for a non-local licensee or registered person, a certified copy of the agency contract between the applicant and the non-local licensee or registered person.
  • A certified copy of the document authorising a person to act as authorised officer on behalf of the applicant.
  • If applicable, documents evidencing that the applicant has in place:
    • An information security policy and security procedures or mechanisms to protect the applicant’s electronic systems from unauthorised access.
    • Procedures and back-up capabilities to protect it against the loss of information.
  • Any other document as the Commissioner may require for purposes of the application or for purposes of an update of information already submitted.

EligibilityEdit

The eligibility criteria of applying for the license are:

  • The applicant must be either the SA citizens or a permanent resident of South Africa or an any individual who has an established place of business in South Africa and is at least eighteen (18) years old.
  • The applicant must be a juristic person that has an established place of business (fixed physical address) in South Africa.
  • The applicant having the effective management of an association of persons whether or not formed in South Africa that has an established place of business in South Africa.
  • The applicant might be a partnership or a trust composed of individuals each of whom is a citizen or a permanent resident of South Africa or an any individual who has an established place of business in South Africa and is at least eighteen (18) years old.


The following person(s) can also apply for license application if they submit the duly authorised written letter on behalf of the applicant to customs.
