Procedure

Apply by Mail

1. To apply by mail, the applicant will have to fill an application form from the Employment and Social Development Canada website.
2. Here is the link to the Application Form.
3. Fill in all the necessary details in the application form.
4. Mail the documents to this address: Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator Phase IV Floor 12 Mail Stop 123 140 Promenade du Portage Gatineau QC K1A 0J9.
5. The applicant does not need to pay fees.
6. Once submitted, the application shall be forwarded to the relevant authorities.
7. The applicant shall receive their SIN related information by mail within a few weeks from the submission of the application.

Eligibility

• The applicant should be a Canadian Citizen, a permanent resident or a temporary resident.
• The applicant should be 12 years of age or older.
• The applicant must have a registered SIN.

Fees

The applicant does not need to pay a fee to obtain information regarding their SIN.

Validity

These apply for SIN that begins with a “9”.

• For an applicant outside Canada, the SIN is valid for 5 years.
• A Social Insurance Number that is assigned to a person who was in Canada when they applied to be registered has a period of validity that expires on the earlier of the following days:
  • The day on which the period authorized for their stay in Canada ends.
  • The day that is two years after the day on which the number is assigned.
