Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for renewal or cancel a Co-operative society in person, the applicant has to visit the Department of Cooperatives in your state.
2. The cooperative societies Department is located in different Ministries for different states.

6. You can enquire the Ministry for information about the Department of Cooperatives in your state.
7. Visit the Department of Cooperatives office with an application letter made by a responsible person for renewing or cancelling a Co-operative society.
8. Approach the relevant authority and ask for the respective procedure to submit the application.
9. Also attach the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page, with the application letter.
10. Now, submit the whole package to the Director General of Co-operative Societies who will put it into required assessment processes.
11. After completing the assessment, if the documents are found in order and provided reasons for the cancellation are found satisfactory, the Director may, by order in writing, cancel the registration of a society.
12. Then, the Director General will appoint a liquidator, subject to his direction and control for performing further legal processes with the cancelled society.
13. The liquidator can summon parties, enforce the attendance of witnesses and compel the production of documents required for the liquidation process.
14. An order made by the liquidator or by the Director shall be enforced by any civil court, having jurisdiction over the place where the registered office of the society is situated.
15. In the liquidation of a society whose registration has been cancelled, the funds, including the reserve funds shall be disposed in a stipulated manner and priority.
16. When the liquidation of a society has been closed, notice of the closing of liquidation shall be published in the Federal or State Gazette.
17. Any surplus fund left over after meeting all the obligations of the liquidated society shall be distributed to members in accordance with the bye-laws of in the society.

Eligibility

• Any registered co-operative society, that needs to be renewed or cancelled, is eligible.
• In case of cancelling, the number of the members of the society should have been reduced to less than ten or in the case of an industrial society, to less than six.
