ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. To obtain a Birth Certificatein Nigeria, visit the National Population Commission (NPC) office in your area of residence.
  2. The address and contact details of the office can be found in the following contact link
  3. Visit the office and collect the application form for birth registration from the relevant department.
  4. You will have to fill and complete the application form with the necessary information like child's name, date of birth, place and type of birth, birth order, etc.,
  5. After completing the application form attach the documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. Please consult the office and pay the required fee while submitting the application and document.
  7. Now your application and documents will be subjected to verification by the higher officials.
  8. Once the verification process is completed you will be informed to collect the birth registration certificate at the office in person or by any applicable means.


NOTE: According to the Official announcement, in Nigeria, certain hospitals, churches, and local governments may issue birth certificates; however, these certificates must be taken to the NPC for registration.

EligibilityEdit

  • For any child born within the country of Nigeria, you can register birth in the National Population Commission.
  • The applicant must be of 18 years or above and he/she can be either of the biological parents or legally declared guardian.

InstructionsEdit

  • If an individual is not born in a hospital (e.g., is born in a house), the parents can obtain a sworn affidavit from their local government, stating that the child was born in that local government area.
  • The sworn affidavit can then be taken to the NPC, which will register the child and issue a birth certificate.
  • If an individual is born in a hospital, the hospital itself will issue the birth certificate by itself or on request.
  • Birth registration is compulsory in Nigeria.
  • Always register birth within the first sixty (60) days of birth.
