You may request for a copy or (international) extract of a birth certificate online using your DigiD.

By Mail

  1. Complete an application to obtain a birth certificate.
  2. After completing and signing the form, send it to the Department of Public Service together with a copy of your valid form of identification.


In Person

Obtain a copy of a birth certificate in person at a Department of Public Service counter at one of The Hague's district offices. For this you will need to present a valid form of identification.

You can set up an appointment online to request for your birth certificate.

The Department of Public Service (Publiekszaken) is located in the City Office at Leyweg 813, 2545 HA The Hague.

FeesEdit

Birth Certificate: 12.50

If you apply for the certificate online, you will pay this amount directly through iDeal. You can only pay by bank card at the district offices; however, you can also pay cash, as well as by bank card, at the Centrum district office (City Hall).

Postage costs are added for requests in writing. You will receive an invoice for the total amount.

Processing TimeEdit

  • Online: You will receive the copy or extract after 3 working days.
  • By Mail: you will receive the certificate after 10 working days.
  • In Person: At the Department of Public Service counter, you will get the copy or extract of birth certificates issued after 1986 right away. You will receive certificates from before 1986 after 5 working days. You will also receive foreign certificates registered with the Municipality of The Hague after 5 working days.

You can obtain a copy or (international) extract of a birth certificate in the municipality where you were born.

You can request a copy or extract of the certificate in different ways:

  • Online
  • By mail
  • In person


Copy or international extract

A copy of the birth certificate comes with a stamp and a signature from the Registry Office. This is also known as a certified, official or authenticated copy.

A copy of the birth certificate is only available in Dutch. If you need a copy of the birth certificate in another language, then you will need to have it translated by a sworn translator.

An international extract of the birth certificate is available in other languages. The extract contains only the personal details which can be found in the birth certificate. The multiple-language extract comes in Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish and Serbo-Croatian. You can choose this option when you submit your application.


Notes:

  • You can only request a copy or extract of a birth certificate in The Hague if you were born in The Hague.
  • For those who would like to request a copy or extract of a foreign birth certificate, this is only possible if the record was registered with the Registry Office of the Municipality of The Hague (Afdeling Landelijke Taken).
  • You can request a copy or extract of a birth certificate if it concerns your own birth certificate. It is also possible to request a copy or extract for someone else. Click link to know more.
  • For birth certificates drawn up more than 100 years ago, you will need to contact The Hague Municipal Archives.
