Montana - How to obtain a Divorce Certificate

- In Person
- You may go to Clerk of District Court in county where divorce was issued with complete application form, and check or money order or cash for the search fee.
- Before going please contact Clerk of District Court in county where divorce was issued. http://courts.mt.gov/dcourt/default.mcpx
- By Mail
- Mail the completed application form, a legal size, self-addressed stamped envelope and check or money order for the search fee. Do not send cash.
- Mail to: Clerk of District Court in county where divorce was issued.

- Divorces in Montana are registered and maintained at the county level, generally from the time of each county's formation date.
- An index to Montana divorces since July 1943 is maintained by the state Montana Vital Statistics office for individuals married in the state of Montana since July 1943 which can help to identify the county in which the divorce occurred.
- Certified copies of divorce records are not available from State Office.
- Records since July 1943. Some items may be verified. Inquiries will be forwarded to appropriate office.
- Apply to county where license was issued if known.
- Certified copies are not available from State office.
- You can order you divorce certificate at Clerk of District Court in county where divorce was issued.
- Cost of copies varies according to county
