Applying for a Standard State ID CardEdit
  1. Visit anySecretary of State office.
  2. Provide proof of the child's validSocial Security number. All Social Security information will be verified. If the child is ineligible for a Social Security number, you must present a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration.
  3. Provide proof ofidentity, U.S. citizenship or legal presence and residencyfor the child. Residency can be confirmed through documents in the parent's name if the family relationship can be established by other forms of documented proof.
  4. Sign the application on behalf of an infant or child who is unable to do so.
  5. Have the child's photograph taken.
  6. Pay thestandard state ID card feeif not exempt.

Residents under age 21 will have "Under 21" printed above their photo.

Applying for an Enhanced State ID CardEdit

Please note that federal law doesn't require an enhanced ID, passport or passport card for children at border crossings until they are age 16.

To apply:

  • Visit anySecretary of State office. Make sure you bring documentation of:
    • A validSocial Security number(for example, the child's Social Security card). All Social Security information will be verified.
    • U.S. citizenship (for example, a certified copy of the child's birth certificate with a raised seal, must be issued by a governmental unit in the U.S. or U.S. territory)
    • Identity (for example, a current Michigan photo ID card. If the child does not have acceptable photo ID, a parent or guardian must present their driver's license or ID and sign for their child.)
    • Residency (for example, a current Michigan photo ID card) Residency can be confirmed through documents in the parent's name if the family relationship can be established by other forms of documented proof

  • Pay theenhanced state ID card fee

Enhanced state ID cards issued to applicants under age 21 have "UNDER 21" printed on the card, below their photo.
All documentation is subject to Department of State approval. In some cases, document approval may not occur in the same day and may require an additional visit.
Your child's enhanced state ID card is valid for up to four years and should arrive in the mail within two to three weeks.

ValidityEdit

Need for the DocumentEdit

The Department of State offers a state identification card for children in a standard and enhanced version. The enhanced ID card is an attractive alternative to the standard card because it allows you tore-enter the U.S.by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean without the need to show additional identity or citizenship documents at the border.
The standard or enhanced state ID card is available for any child or infant at the parent or legal guardian's request.
