Registration of New or Second hand Imported Vehicle

  1. To register a vehicle in your name, the applicant should make the application to the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA). Please view the NLTA contact details through this Contact details.
  2. First, the applicant should take the vehicle for examination at the vehicle examination center and obtain the particulars of the motor vehicle form.
  3. Then the applicant should go to the Registrar General’s Department for the registration of the deed of sale. Please view the Registrar General’s Department contact information Contact details.
  4. Upon obtaining the deed of sale, the applicant should visit the Registration at the NLTA along with the required documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below.
  5. Pay the requisite registration fee at the cash desk and obtain the payment receipt and then submit the complete application dossier to the registration officer.
  6. The registration officer will verify the application and if all the required documents are furnished as required and the application is deemed to be correct, the officer will register the vehicle under the applicant’s name.
  7. The applicant will then be issued the registration book.


Registration of a Locally assembled vehicle (trailer)

  1. To register a Locally assembled vehicle (trailer), the applicant should make the application to the National Land Transport Authority (NLTA). Please view the NLTA contact details through this Contact details.
  2. First, the applicant should take the vehicle for examination at the vehicle examination center and obtain the particulars of the motor vehicle form and a certificate from a local Mechanical Engineer which is obtained on the assembly of the vehicle.
  3. Then the applicant should go to the Registrar General’s Department for the registration of the deed of sale. Please view the Registrar General’s Department contact information Contact details.
  4. Upon obtaining the deed of sale, the applicant should visit the Registration at the NLTA along with the required documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below.
  5. Pay the requisite registration fee at the cash desk and obtain the payment receipt and then submit the complete application dossier to the registration officer.
  6. The registration officer will verify the application and if all the required documents are furnished as required and the application is deemed to be correct, the officer will register the vehicle under the applicant’s name.
  7. The applicant will then be issued the registration book of the Locally assembled vehicle (trailer).

Documents for New or Second hand Imported Vehicle

  • One original deed of sale duly registered and one photocopy of the document.
  • Payment Receipt from Registrar.
  • The original Bill of Entry.
  • The Particulars of Motor Vehicle Form obtained from the Vehicle Examination Centre.
  • Import permit (if the vehicle is a second-hand imported one).
  • In case you have reserved a registration mark to be allocated to your vehicle, the receipt of payment for that mark.

  • The original deed of sale registered and one photocopy of the document.
  • The Particulars of Motor Vehicle Form obtained from the Vehicle Examination Centre.

  • Rs 400 for a motor vehicle (other than a motorcycle or autocycle) or trailer.
  • Rs 300 for a motorcycle.
  • Rs 200 for an autocycle.


For locally assembled vehicles or Trailers

  • The fee is Rs 400.
