Mauritius - Obtain Permit or Licence to Import Cat and Dog

Apply In Person
- To apply for the Pet (Cat and Dog) import permit, the applicant should make the application to the Ministry of Agro Industry and Food Security, Division of Veterinary Services. Please view the ministry’s contact details through this Contact Details.
- First, the applicant should write an official letter specifying the purpose of the visit to Mauritius and state whether he/she is a Mauritian resident returning home permanently or on holidays and how long the applicant has stayed abroad, a breeder or otherwise. If the applicant is an expatriate they should send a copy of their resident permit/occupation permit, and specify the length of their stay in Mauritius along with a certificate of sterilization of the dog/cat and a Copy of the vaccination book of the pet.
- The applicant should send the request letter along with the required documents as mentioned in step 2 above to the Division of Veterinary Services.
- On receipt of the applicant's request, the division will forward the application to the Import Permit committee.
- The Import Permit committee evaluates the applicant request and if it meets the required standards, the committee will approve the request for issuance of a pet import permit.
- Then the committee will prepare a statement with all the information concerning importing of the pet, treatments, and tests to be done on the pet.
- The division will then send to the applicant the conditional statement prepared by the Import Permit committee.
- The applicant should then satisfy all the conditions provided by the division and send proof to the division that all the conditions imposed on the specimen copy of the Import Permit are complied with. Note that the originals or certified true copies of originals should be sent.
- The applicant should then proceed and hire a kennel/cattery at the Quarantine Station at a fee for the purpose of quarantine of the pet once it arrives in Mauritius.
- Then the applicant should liaise with the Division of Veterinary Services and pay the import fee of Rs (MUR) 500 per animal and veterinary clearance fee of Rs (MUR) 500, as applicable at the time of application.
- Once all the conditions have been met, the Import permit committee will process the import permit of the pet and send it to the applicant.
- Note:
- The applicant should apply and obtain an Import Permit from the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Division of Veterinary Services, three to six months before departure, depending on their residential country and no pet will be allowed entry into Mauritius without an import permit.

- Note that at least four days before the arrival of the dog/cat, the applicant should inform the time of arrival and flight number to Division of Veterinary Services by email or phone, and on the date of arrival, the applicant or the applicant’s representative should be present at the Airport, for customs formalities. In case of the absence of the applicant or representative (broker), the animal risks being put back on the plane at the applicant’s cost or put to sleep after one hour of landing.
