Mauritius - Apply for Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP)

Apply In Person

  1. To apply for the Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP), the application should be made to the Occupation Permit Unit (OPU) under the Passport and Immigration Office by the Employer of a foreign student having completed at least an undergraduate degree in a tertiary education institution in Mauritius.   2. As the employer, you should obtain the application form for the YPOP from the OPU office.
  3. Complete the application form correctly and then gather and prepare all the required supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below.
  4. Then scan the completed application form along with all the required supporting and send the complete application file to the Occupation Permit Unit (OPU) by email through this email address: [email protected]
  5. Upon the OPU receiving your application, a joint committee made up of the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) and the Economic Development Board (EDB) will assess your application to check if it is complete as required and that you have provided all the required documents. Note that if the application is incomplete, you as the employer will be requested to provide the missing document/s or information to complete your application.
  6. If the application satisfies all the required standards, it will be approved by the joint committee and then it will be forward for approval to the Prime Minister’s Office, not later than 5 days from the date you applied.
  7. If the application is approved by the Prime Minister’s Office, an approval in principle will be issued by the PM’s office and it will be sent to you the employer through your email address. Note that the Approval in Principle will be valid for 90 days from the date of issue subject to the existing visa requirements.
  8. The contact the OPU office and schedule an appointment for verification of the original documents and receiving the permit.
  9. On the scheduled date, both you the employer, and the young professional (foreign student) should visit the OPU office and submit the original document for verification at the service desk.
  10. If the OPU official is satisfied that all the original documents are correct, You will be required to make payment of the permit fee, which can be done either through the online (Internet banking) or Bank Draft/Cheque drawn to the order of the Government of Mauritius, upon which you will receive a payment receipt or a confirmation SMS which is to be presented to the permit official.
  11. Upon confirmation of the payment by the PIO officer, you will be registered with the Economic Development Board and issued with the Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP) and the Unique Identification (UID) card on the same day.


NOTE:

  • If your request is denied, you can submit an appeal for reconsideration within 30 days from the date of the turndown email. However, the appeal can only be submitted once through this email address [email protected] and In case that the appeal has not been successful, the foreign national should make arrangements to leave the country.

  • Degree Certificate and/or Attestation from the concerned Tertiary Education Institution certifying successful completion of the degree course.
  • Passport Biodata page.
  • Birth certificate in English or French.
  • Marriage Certificate/Divorce certificate (English or French) where applicable.
  • Last entry business visa page (in case the applicant is not in Mauritius).
  • Medical certificate and detailed report from local Doctor in Mauritius and reports (less than six months old).
  • One color passport size photograph (of less than six months old - 3.5cm x 4.5cm).
  • Brief on the activities of the company.
  • Appropriate license for the company and if applicable (FSC, GBL, etc.)

EligibilityEdit

The following criteria must be respected to be eligible for a YPOP:

  • Foreign students having completed at least an undergraduate degree in a tertiary education institution recognized by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) in Mauritius.
  • The application for the YPOP must be only in the fields listed in Part II of the Schedule of the Immigration Act which is as follows:
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Biotechnology
  • Fintech
  • Robotics
  • Financial services
  • Information technology
  • Such other field as the Minister may approve



FeesEdit

The Permit Fee is as follows:

  • MUR 5,000 (Not more than one year).
  • MUR 7,500 (More than one year but not more than 2 years).
  • MUR 10,000 (More than 2 years but not more than 3 years).



ValidityEdit

  • The permit is valid for a period between one to three years.

  • Young Professionals traveling to Mauritius as tourists/visitors will not be eligible to apply for Young Professional Occupation Permit.
  • If an employer still requires the service of the foreign employee after the 3 years, the employer may apply for an Occupation Permit as Professional on behalf of the employee

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • Young Professional Occupation Permit (YPOP) is issued to foreign students having completed at least an undergraduate degree in a tertiary education institution in Mauritius authorizing them to work and reside in Mauritius as stated in Section 13 of the Economic Development Board Act 2017 and Section 9A of the Immigration Act 1970.

Cancellation of the YPOP

  • If at any time, the employer terminates the contract of employment of the Young Professional, the Employer should immediately inform in writing the Chief Executive Officer of the Economic Development Board for deregistration. Subsequently, the PIO would be notified to cancel the YPOP.
  • The originals of the Occupation Permit and UID Card should be returned to the Passport and Immigration Office and the Young Professional shall leave the country within a period of one month as from cancellation of the Permit.
