Apply In Person
- To apply for a National Identity Card (NIC) in Mauritius, the applicant should make the application to the Mauritius National Identity Card Centres. Please view the centres' contact information through this link Contact details.
- Gather and prepare all the required supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below.
- The applicant should visit the National Identity Card Centre in their region and make their way to the service desk of the National Identity Card unit.
- Then submit the documents to the service official at the National Identity Card unit service desk.
- The official will receive the documents and verify the documentation accordingly, and upon the verification, the official may request the applicant to provide missing documentation or information to complete the verification process, however, if the documentation is complete as required, the applicant will be referred to the next stage.
- After a successful verification process of the documentation, the applicant’s fingerprints will be taken and then the applicant’s photograph will also be taken procedurally as part of the registration.
- Then after the registration process, the applicant will verify the personal details and sign a user Declaration Form.
- Upon signing the declaration form, a collection slip will be issued to the applicant and the applicant will be requested to visit in person after seven days at the same National Identity Card centre, along with the Collection slip to collect the Smart ID card.
- If for administrative purposes and the applicant need ther ID card before the collection date of the ID card, the applicant can obtain a memo from the Mauritius National Identity Card Centre for temporary use until the Smart ID card is issued. Note that the Police Memo must be dated less than 7 days.
Home visit application
- To apply for the home visit registration of the Identity Card, the applicant should make their application to the National Identity Card Unit, however, the applicant must meet the following criteria for them to be eligible for the home visit Registration and Card Issuance.
- The applicant should be a beneficiary of an Invalid Pension or an old-age Person.
- A person related to the applicant or the applicant’s caretaker should fill in an application form which can also be obtained at the Mauritius National Identity Card Centres.
- The duly filled out Application form for Bedridden and a detailed route direction to the appicant’s location should be submitted together with photocopies of the applicant’s relevant documents listed in the “Required Documents” section below to the Mauritius National Identity Card Centres for processing.
- An appointment will be set through a phone call from the Home Visit team to confirm the date and time for the Home Visit Registration and Issuance.
- Then a designated home visit official/s will then visit the applicant’s home for the home visit registration and Issuance of the ID card on a set date and time.
- Note that the applicant should be bedridden or the applicant should be a beneficiary of an Invalid Pension or an old age Person to be eligible for the home visit registration.

Citizen (18 Years)
- Recent Birth Certificate.
- Recent Marriage Certificate (where applicable).
- Proof of Address (not older than 3 months).
- Proof of Absence (for a citizen who applies after the grace period of 6 months on attaining the age of 18).
- A4 printed format in original:
- CEB bill, CWA bill, Telephone bill, Rent book, any other Official Correspondence (Bank, employer, University, etc.). E.g.: Passport, discharged letter from hospital, prison, official letter from the educational institution.
Foreigners who acquired Mauritian Citizenship
- Citizenship Letter/Certificate from Prime Minister’s Office.
- Foreign Birth Certificate.
- Marriage Certificate (where applicable).
- Proof of Address (Local and/or overseas).
- Passport.
- An official document evidencing a Divorce, Change of Name where applicable.
Mauritian Descent (Person born abroad where one of the parents is a Mauritian citizen at the time of birth)
- Process Sheet from Prime Minister’s Office (confirmation letter of eligibility for an ID card).
- Foreign Birth Certificate.
- Marriage Certificate (where applicable).
- Proof of Address (Local and/or overseas).
- Mauritian Parent’s Birth Certificate.
- Mauritian Parent’s ID (if available).
- Passport (if available).
- An official document evidencing a Divorce, Change of Name where applicable.

EligibilityEdit
- Mauritius Citizens of 18 years and above are eligible to apply.
- A person of Mauritian Descent or a person who has been newly naturalized can also apply for the Smart ID Card, once they have obtained their proper documents from the Prime Minister's Office.

InstructionsEdit
- Every person who is a citizen of Mauritius should, within 6 months of attaining the age of 18, apply for an identity card at any office designated by the Registrar.
- Where a person:
- is not a resident of Mauritius, or is unable to comply with the 1st point above on account of serious illness, as certified by a medical practitioner in the public service, or on any other compelling and reasonable ground, he/she may apply for an identity card in such manner and within such period of attaining the age of 18 as the Registrar may determine.
- Every person who applies for an identity card should:
- produce his birth certificate or his certificate of registration or naturalization as a citizen of Mauritius, as the case may be.
- produce such other documents as the Registrar may require.
- allow his fingerprints, and other biometric information about himself, to be taken and recorded.
- allow himself to be photographed.
- for the purpose of the identity card.
- Citizens who attain 60 years (senior citizens) need to apply for a new Identity card with senior citizen (SC) logo at the National Identity Centres of Port Louis, Rose Hill, and Rodrigues.
- Such transaction is free of charge (No payment fee is applicable).
- Incomplete, inadequate, or inaccurate filling of the form may cause a delay in the registration of the bedridden citizen, and please note that the National Identity Card Unit cannot be held responsible for such delay.
