Kenya - Renunciation of Citizenship

ProcedureEdit

Declarations for renunciation are made by citizens of Kenya who wish to voluntarily renounce their Kenyan citizenship. Acquisition of citizenship in another country would permit a Kenyan national to renounce his Kenyan Citizenship.

Apply OnlineEdit

The first step is to register with the Kenya electronic Foreign Nationals Services (eFNS) portal through the following link eFNS Online Platform.
Click on create account then click on the Create an Account to register.
You will need to fill in your personal information so to register for an eFNS account For Kenyan citizens, you will need your national ID number while foreigners residing in Kenya will need your foreigner certificate. If you do not have national ID or foreigner certificate, select other and use passport details to register.
Once you have registered you will then need to login to your eFNS account and under the Submit application tab click on Submit new applications.
This will direct you to the next page where you should make your next selection. Under the Citizenship Service Section, click on the Apply Now link in the Renunciation Tab.
This will direct you to next page; where you are to read the instructions carefully, make sure you have all the requirements to make the application and then click on the Apply Now button which will direct you to the online application form.
Fill in the online application form with all the required details and upload supporting documents. These details include:-

(i). Upload your passport photo

(ii). Full names

(iii). Foreign Address (For those currently not living in Kenya)

(iv). Postal and Physical Address in Kenya

(v). Place and date of birth

(vi). Upload birth certificate

(vii). Nature of citizenship (birth, registration, naturalisation)

(viii). Other citizenship

(ix). Nature of other citizenship (birth, registration, naturalisation)

(x). Current Residence

(xi). Upload police clearance certificate

Then click on Save Application Details.
You will be directed to the next page where you can print your application form and present it to the Immigration Headquarters Offices in Nyayo House Nairobi or their regional offices for processing.
- Make sure you present all the required documents to the Kenya immigration offices or missions abroad.
The application for renunciation, will be sent to the Minister of Immigration for approval. Upon his approval the renunciation declaration will be registered; and upon registration, that person (the applicant) shall cease to be a citizen of Kenya.
Upon approval of the application you will be requested to pay the application fee of Ksh 20000 and you will be issued with a renunciation certificate.
The processes takes normally 14 days from the date of submission to the immigration offices.

Apply in PersonEdit

Applications can be done in person. The first step is to visit the Immigration Offices or Kenya missions abroad to make the application .Here you are required to present the required documents to the immigration officer. These include:-

(i). 2 passport size photographs

(ii). Original and copies of Kenyan passport and ID

(iii). Kenya Birth Certificate

(iv). Copy of other country’s passport

(v). Copy of other country’s proof of citizenship e.g. citizenship certificate of registration or Naturalization

(vi). Copy of the Police Clearance Certificate

(vii). If the applicant is making the application from Kenya, they must ensure that they are lawfully present in the country as they wait for application to be finalized.
The immigration officer will provide you with a Declaration of Voluntary Renunciation of Kenya Citizenship FORM 15 to fill.
You should then lodge the completed application form to the immigration offices or Kenya mission abroad.
After lodging the application for renunciation, the application will be sent to the Minister of Immigration in Kenya for approval.
Upon his approval the renunciation declaration will be registered; and upon registration, that person (the applicant) shall cease to be a citizen of Kenya.
Upon approval of the application you will be requested to pay the application fee of Ksh 20,000 after which you will be issued with a renunciation certificate.
The process takes an average of 30days to complete if you applying from abroad.

EligibilityEdit

Any citizen of Kenya of full age and capacity who is also a citizen of any country; or a national of a foreign country, is eligible to make the application to renounce their Kenya Citizenship.
The individual must be:-

Must be aged 18 and above (Age will not be taken into account if the woman is married)
Must have a sound mind
Must have or will soon obtain foreign citizenship
Has acquired or would likely be granted citizenship in another country
Has no criminal or financial liability to the state

FeesEdit

A fee of Ksh. 20,000 is Payable once upon approval.

ValidityEdit

The validity period is forever.

Processing TimeEdit

The processing time is two weeks if the application is being made from Kenya or one month if the application is being made from abroad.

Section 19 (1) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011 provides that , where a Kenyan citizen by birth voluntarily makes a declaration of renunciation of Kenyan citizenship, in the prescribed manner, the Cabinet Secretary shall cause the declaration to be registered.
Before you start this application make sure you have obtained citizenship and a passport from another country.
Make sure you have obtained a police clearance certificate from Kenya.
