Step 1: Register with the Mining Cadaster Portal

1. Applicants are required to first registerwith the Mining Cadaster Portal
2. Once on the homepage, navigate to the “I wish to make Mineral Rights Applications(and do not hold any licences or permits)” section and click on the “Register for an account” link to continue with the application.
3. This will take the applicant to the next page which is the “Registration to use the Online Mining Cadastre” page.
4. Fill in the required information for registration.
5. After completing the form, and uploading supporting documentation, accept the terms and conditions by checking the checkbox, and click on the “Register” button to create an account.
6. The applicant will receive an email to verify their email address, however the account will be restricted until it has been authorized by a Ministry representative.
7. Once authorized, the applicant will receive another email indicating that the account has been updated, after which the applicant will be able to sign in to the portal.

Step 2: Login the Mining Cadaster Portal and file the application

1. Log into the “Mining Cadaster Portal” account using the registered Email address and password.
2. Upon login the Mining Cadaster Portal select the “License Applications” option on the left pane and click on the “Artisanal mining license/Permit” tab. This will direct the applicant to the “Application for a Artisanal Mining Licence/Permit” page where they can continue with the application process.
3. Fill in the required information, upload the required documents and accept the terms and conditions then click on the “Submit” Button.
4. Upon clicking the “Submit” button, the application will be sent to Ministry for review and recommendation.

Step 3: Processing and Evaluation of the application by the Ministry.

1. The license application shall be processed within 07 working days from the date of submission.
2. The application shall be reviewed for material completeness.
3. After a successful documentation review process, the outcome of the application (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) will be sent to the applicant via email or any other means preferred by the applicant.

Step 4: issue of the Artisanal Mining permit

1. The applicant should visit the selected license pick up station (Regional Ministry Offices) with their valid identification document to be validated before being issued the permit.

Eligibility

• A permit for an artisanal mining operation shall be granted to a person who ;
• Is a citizen of Kenya
• Has attained the age of majority; and
• May be a member of an artisanal mining cooperative association or group.

Fees

• Please consult with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining office.

Validity

• The validity of the permit shall be mentioned on the document and shall remain valid for that stipulated time phase, uncles suspended, cancelled or evoked by the Authority.

• Name, nationality and address of the applicant;
• Name of the co-operative, association or group, place of registration and the registered office address;
• Minerals in respect of which the permit is sought
• Description of the area in respect of which the permit is sought
• Land owner’s consent has been obtained where the land is not designated as an artisanal or small scale mining area
• Declaration
