Kenya - How to Remit the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Contribution

- The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a Universal health coverage (UHC) that covers the nuclear family which includes the principal member and legally declared spouse and children. NHIF Branches contact details
- Members (contributors) can remit their NHIF contribution using the following methods: NSSF Kenya payment deadline for any month is the 9th day of the following month.
- Direct Bank deposit
- Redeeming Safaricom Bonga Points
- Mobile banking

The remit of NHIF contribution via Direct Bank Deposit
- Members (contributors) can remit their NHIF contribution by direct bank deposit in various banks like Equity Bank, National Bank (NBK), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), and Cooperative Bank (Note: NHIF Printed Banking slips are available in the fore-mentioned banks).
- Contributors can either deposit Ksh 500 for every month or Ksh 6000 for the whole year, the depositor is issued with a bank deposit slip as proof of payment.
- Upon receipt of the member’s contribution the NHIF system will automatically update the member’s contribution status automatically.

The remit of NHIF contribution via Mobile banking
- Registered MPESA customers, should go to the MPESA Menu >> Lipan an MPESA>>Pay bill Enter 200222 as the pay bill number >>Enter your National Identification Number as the Account Number.>> Enter the amount (Ksh 500 for every month or Ksh 6000 for the whole year) >> Enter your MPESA PIN Number. To complete the transaction process.
- The contributor will receive a message from MPESA confirming the reduction of the payment from your MPESA wallet, this is proof of payment.
- Upon receipt of the member’s contribution the NHIF system will automatically update the member’s contribution status.
The remit of NHIF contribution by Redeeming Safaricom Bonga Points
- Members (contributors) can remit their NHIF contribution by redeeming their Safaricom Bonga points.
- Dial the USSD code*126#, navigate to Lipa Na Bonga, then indicates PayBill Number as 200222, and the account number as their National Identification Number. To complete the transaction.
- The contributor will receive a message from Safaricom notifying/ confirming the Bonga Points deduction value of either deposit Ksh 500 for every month or Ksh 6000 for the whole year.
- Upon receipt of the member’s contribution the NHIF system will automatically update the member’s contribution status.
Please note:
- Registered NHIF members in the formal sector employees (members) contributions are deducted and remitted to the Fund by their employers. This is done by Cheque or through E-banking.

EligibilityEdit
- Every registered self-employed or employed member is required to make a monthly/ yearly contribution to their accounts.
FeesEdit
- For members under the voluntary category, they pay Kshs.500 per month (Kshs.6000 per annum).
- For those in formal employment, contributions are made as per their income.
ValidityEdit
- Members can make a monthly contribution of Ksh 500.00 or a payment of the whole year Ksh 6000.00.
- For monthly contributors’ members are required to pay on or before the 9th of the following month to avoid penalties.
- If payments are made after the 9th of the following month, then a penalty of 50% (KES 250) of the voluntary monthly contribution will be surcharged. A member will be required to pay outstanding arrears and/or penalties to access services.

- The processing time is within a few minutes when the remit is made via mobile transaction and after a day where the remit is made by bank deposit.
