Registration of Marriage by Notice
- This happens when a man and a woman who are either Kenyan nationals or registered refugees residing in Kenya intend to marry under the Civil, Christian, or Hindu system of marriage. The two shall give a written notice of at least 21 days to the Registrar and the marriage must be solemnized within 90 days from the date of notice. Registrar of Marriages Contact Link
Apply Online
Step 1: Login or Reister with the E-Citizen Portal
- Using a browser search the e-citizen login portal those with an already existing account should enter their login credential and then click on the” Sign In” tab. if you do not have an account click on the “Sign up” hyperlink.
- select the account type you are eligible to register i.e. either as a citizen, resident, diplomat, or foreigner.
- The applicant will then be required to capture their basic bio details, contact details and verify their login credential and upload a recent photo ID (However this step can be skipped).
- upon successful registering users can now sign in to their e-Citizen account using their Email Address or ID Number and password.
Step 2: File the Notice of Marriage
- On the home page select the “Registrar of Marriage” option, and click on the “Registration of Marriage” option to proceed with the notification process.
- On the next page applicants will be required to capture details as applicable.
- Under Type, select the system of marriage i.e (Civil, Christian, Hindu, or Cstomary) then click on the “Next” tab
- Under the type of registration, select “ Notice” then click on the “ Next” tab.
- Registration instruction page will be displayed listing all the required documentation application fees and processing duration. Read through the instructions carefully.
- Before you fill in the online application form, which can be downloaded via the e-citizen portal or directly downloaded via this link Notice of Marriage
- The above form should be filled by both parties, signed, dated, scanned, and uploaded together with the following relevant documents;
- Registration Of Civil Marriage – Notices
- Copy of National Identity Card or valid Passport or valid Alien Card for Refugees
- Copy of Birth certificate
- One colored passport-size photo for each Applicant
- Copy of Death Certificate (if widow or widower)
- Copy of Divorce Decree Absolute (If the partner had been married before and is divorced)
- A sworn affidavit to confirm marital status in the event the Divorce Decree or the Death Certificate is more than 2 years old.
- Copies of Identity Card or Valid Passport for the two (2) witnesses
- Christian and Hindu Marriages - Notice
- Copy of National Identity Card, valid Passport, or valid Alien Card for Refugees
- Copy of Birth certificate
- One colored passport-size photo for each Applicant
- Copy of Death Certificate (if widow or widower)
- Copy of Divorce Decree Absolute (If the partner had been married before and divorced)
- A sworn affidavit to confirm marital status in the event the Divorce Decree or the Death Certificate is more than 2 years old
- Copy of license for the Minister of Faith
- Provide a serial number of the marriage book to be used (to be obtained from the Minister of Faith).
- Wedding invitation card.
- Applicant shall be required to pay a notice fee of Kshs 600/= on the online platform upon approval of their application
- After the lapse of 21 day’s Notice period, parties are required to book an appointment on the online platform to appear for an interview and verification of original documents
- Upon successful completion of the interview, civil marriage registration parties will be required to pay a fee of Kshs 3,300/= on the online platform after which they will be booked for solemnization of the marriage.
- For Christian and Hindu marriages; parties will be required to pay a fee of Kshs 800/= for the clearance certificate on the online platform if the wedding is to take place inside a licensed location or Kshs 7200/= if the wedding is to take place outside a licensed place of worship.
- The time frame is 30 to 90 days (30 days for notice and processing, marriage to be solemnized within 90 days) and the Clearance Certificate will be issued 3 days after interview, approval, and payment.

EligibilityEdit
- Parties should have attained the legal age of marriage.
- The registration of a customary marriage is ONLY APPLICABLE to Kenyans who have contracted African customary marriage rites;
- At the time of registration, the parties MUST NOT have entered into either a CIVIL or a CHRISTIAN marriage;
- The parties should have no impendent to marriage.
