Kenya - Apply for a Tax Return

- To apply for Tax Returns, the applicant should file his/her returns through the KRA iTax Portal via this iTax Portal.
- On the portal, the applicant will be required to enter his/her Personal Identification Number (PIN) and click on the “Continue” button to go to the log-in page. Note that to complete the login process, the applicant must have a KRA Personal Identification Number (PIN). Kindly refer to “Kenya - Apply for KRA PIN” if you wish to apply for the KRA PIN.
- On the login page, the applicant should enter his/her iTax password and provide the security stamp math solution and then click on the “login” button to login into the iTax portal.
- Once logged in, move the cursor to point at the “Returns” dropdown menu on the information bar and then select “File Return” to go to the e-Returns page.
- On the e-Returns page, the applicant will find his/her taxpayer details and the applicant will be required to select his/her tax obligation by opening the tax obligation drop-down menu and then selecting the type of obligation the applicant wishes to apply for. For the case of Kenyan residents who are employed the applicant should select this option “ Income Tax -Resident Individual”.
- Upon selecting the type Tax Obligation, the applicant should click on the “Next” button to go to the Income Tax - Resident Individual Form page.
- Read the steps provided then download the Income Tax - Resident Individual Form either in Exel sheet or ODS.
- Once the form is downloaded, find the form in the downloads file of your computer and open it, the Income Tax - Resident Individual Form will be saved as “IT1_Individual_Resident_Return_XLS” and it will be in a WinRAR Zip file.
- Unzip the file access the Income Tax - Resident Individual form in excel sheet and open the form. Note that to complete filling the form, the applicant will have to enable “Macro” in his/her computer.
- Then the applicant should file all the mandatory fields of the form. Please refer to the KRA guideline on how to complete the Income Tax - Resident Individual form under the “Information which might help” section below.
- Once the form is completed and validated, the applicant should go back to his/her iTax account under the “Kenya - Filing KRA Individual Tax Returns” to upload the file of the filled-in Income Tax - Resident Individual Form.
- The applicant should select the return period of the year being applied for example 01/01/2022.
- Then the applicant should upload the form (the complete “IT1_Individual_Resident_Return_XLS” form) saved in a zip file.
- Once the file is successfully uploaded, the applicant should agree to the provided Terms and Conditions by clicking the check box.
- Then click on the “Submit” button and the applicant will be asked if he/she wants to upload the form.
- Click on the “Ok” button and the system will direct the applicant to the Returns page.
- On this page, the applicant will be informed that the return was submitted successfully and the applicant will also be provided with the Acknowledgment number.
- Then download the returns receipt by clicking on the “Download Returns Receipt” hyperlink. Note that the returns receipt will also be sent to the applicant’s email address.
