Kenya - Apply for Registration and Indexing of Community Health Nursing Students

ProcedureEdit

  • Taking into consideration the Nursing Council’s Kenya (NCK)mandate to inform the health sector and beyond on the expected number of medical doctors produced by training institutions, the indexing register was formulated to track students undertaking the Community health nursing courses.
  • An indexing number is therefore allocated to each student upon admission to a nursing training school.

Apply In Person

  1. Upon admission to a nursing school , Community health nursing students are required to register with Nursing Council of Kenya for an index number within sixty days following commencement of training. To do this the nursing student needs to make an application for registration and indexing using the NCK Online Service Portal through the guide of the dean of student.
  2. Visit your respective Dean of Student’s office to initiate your NCK registration and indexing process. Here the applicant will be given temporary login credentials to be able to access the NCK Online Service Portal to make the registration and indexing application.
    • Make sure you are eligible to make this application. The “Eligibility” requirements are mentioned in the eligibility section of this page.
  3. Upon entering the NCK Online Service Portal, fill in the required information and attach the required documents. A list of the required documents is mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. Confirm that all the information you have given is correct and click on the “Submit Application” button.
    • This will cause an invoice for payment of the application fees to be generated.
  5. On the next page click on the “Click to Pay Now” button to pay for the student NCK registration and indexing .
    • Proceed to make the payment using the instructions given online. The Payment instructions will be generated and displayed automatically in the portal. More information about the student registration and indexing fees to be paid is given in the “Fee” section of this page.
  6. Upon making the student registration and indexing fee payment, a payment receipt will be generated online.
    • Note: Wait for approximately 10 minutes then refresh the invoice page. After refreshing the page, you should find copies of the receipt ready to be printed.
  7. Click on the “Download Receipt “ button to download the payment receipt .
    • Print the receipt and license and keep it for future reference.
  8. At this point the Council through its Indexing Section verifies submissions to ensure that Community health nursing student admitted to training schools meet the minimum admission criteria for their programme of choice.
  9. Once verification is completed, you will be assigned an Index Number which is a unique reference that will remain your identification throughout training and practice.
  10. The outcome of the indexing process will be communicated to you through your training institution, SMS and email notifications.
    • The whole process is usually completed after a period of one month.

  • Health Declaration form (Optional)
  • Upgrading students must also attach copies of previous Nursing Council of Kenya certificates/qualifications and current practice license
  • If names provided in the Indexing Application are different from the Legal Names listed in the National Identification Card [ID], documentary evidence of legal change of name must also be attached

EligibilityEdit

  • The Community health nursing student needs to be admitted to in a nursing training school undertaking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Diploma in Nursing or its equivalent.

Note:

  • Students undertaking a Community health nursing programme must meet the set admission criteria and certain indexing requirements.

  • KCSE aggregate of grade: C+ with:

  • English or Kiswahili: C+
  • Mathematics or Physics: C+
  • Chemistry: C+
  • Biology: C+


Cluster B:

  • English or Kiswahili: C+
  • Mathematics: C+
  • Physical Sciences: C+
  • Biological Sciences: C+

  • Aggregate grade : C Plain

Mandatory Subjects:

  • Biology or Biological Sciences: C Plain
  • English or Kiswahili: C Plain
  • Grade C- in any of the following subjects: Physical Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, General Science, Physics with Chemistry

  • The index number is valid until the nursing student is has finished undertaking the training programme and councils licensing examination.

Information which might helpEdit

  • It is the duty of the dean of the nursing school to submit the list of students admitted during the training period, to ensure they’re indexed by the Council. This should be done within sixty days following commencement of training.
  • Community health nursing students are therefore advised to follow up with their respective School Deans to ensure they have been indexed.
  • Community health nursing students who have not submitted themselves to the Indexing Process are not acknowledged by the Council and not eligible to study or practice nursing or midwifery in Kenya.
