- Taking into consideration the Medical Council’s mandate to inform the health sector and beyond on the expected number of medical doctors produced by training institutions, the indexing register was formulated to track students undertaking the aforementioned courses.
- An indexing number is therefore allocated to each student upon admission to a medical school.
Apply In Person
- Upon admission to a medical school , medicine students are required to register with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s for an index number. To do this the medical student needs to make an application for registration as medical student, by visiting the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) offices to make the application. The contact information of the KMPDC offices can be found in the “Office Location & Contact” Section of this page.
- This should be done within three months of admission to the medical school.
- Here the applicant will be given an Registration as a Medical Student form to fill and submit. The application form can also be downloaded from the KMPDC’s official website through the following link.
- Make sure you are eligible to make this application. The “Eligibility” requirements are mentioned in the eligibility section of this page.
- Fill in the application form and attach the required documents. A list of the required documents is mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Proceed to pay the required fees. Details of the required fees for registration are provided in the “Fees” Section of this page.
- Submit the completed application form , payment receipt and all the required documents to the dean of the medical school so that the application can be forwarded to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council for processing.
- It is the duty of the dean of the respective medical or dental school to submit the list of students admitted during the training period, to ensure they’re indexed by the Council. This should be done within three months of admission.
- Upon submission of the application to the Council, the Council will go through your application documents to verify their authenticity and if they meet the requirements.
- Upon completion of the verification process, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will contact the applicant to collect their Medical Student Index number in person.
- A list of the index numbers will also be sent by the KMPDC to the dean of the medical school. You can collect your index number from the dean.
- The whole process is usually completed after a period of 14 days.
- The applicant will be required to produce proof of identity when collecting the Medical Student Index number in person.

EligibilityEdit
- The student needs to be admitted to a medical school undertaking a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree programme or its equivalent.
Note:
- All candidates who want to be admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree programme or its equivalent must satisfy certain indexing requirements.
These include:
- For Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education holders, minimum university admission requirement is C+ (plus) and in addition, an average of B plain in each the of the following cluster subjects:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics or Mathematics; and
- English or Kiswahili
- For Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education holders, a minimum of two principal passes in Biology, Chemistry and a subsidiary pass in either Mathematics or Physics.
- For International Baccalaureate (IB), a minimum of grade 5 or above in International Baccalaureate.
- For Diploma holders in Medical Sciences, a minimum “O” level Division II pass or C+ (plus) mean grade and a credit C+ pass in the cluster subjects in K.C.S.E., in addition to a three year diploma with a minimum of a credit pass from a medical training institution recognized by the Board.
- Proficiency in the English language.
- For holders of any degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent qualifications from a recognized university, subject to passing Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
- Other qualifications deemed to be equivalent to those in POINTS ONE TO FIVE above from institutions recognized by the different institutions’ Senates.
