ProcedureEdit

  1. Submit all the required documents at the passport office in your municipalities or at embassies abroad
  2. All documents must be original
  3. Fill out application forms and attach your photos
  4. Once your application is received and approved you will be given a paper receipts with pick up dates stamped on them dont lose this paper it will be needed to collect the passport.

Required DocumentsEdit

One Application Form (please use BLACK ink)

  • Applicants under the age of 20 years may apply only for a 5 year passport.
  • Even applicants age 0 they must apply for their own passport.
    • Current Passport (even if expired)
    • One photo, taken within six months. The Photo must measure 35mm x 45mm in size of face, from head to chin should be between 3.2cm - 3.6 cm (1 1/4 - 1 3/8 inches). Should be facing forward with plain background and no shadows -No hats, masks or sunglasses School picture may not be accepted -Best if taken at a photo studio as grainy digital camera photos or blurred photos may not be accepted.
    • One Family Registry (Koseki Tohon or Koseki Shohon), issued within six months

For citizens applying abroad they must also bring:

  • PR Card (for Permanent Residents)
  • Valid Foreign Passport
  • Birth Certificate (for Dual Citizens)

InstructionsEdit

  • By convention, Japan's Emperor and Empress do not hold a passport.
  • Applicant can appoint someone to fill in the application on their behalf
  • Agents applying for someone must indicate so on the application form they must also produce their identification at the time of submitting application and collecting the passport

Japanese passports are issued to Japanese citizens to travel outside Japan.There are four types of Japanese passports.

Ordinary passportEdit

Issued to normal citizens. Ordinary passports are issued in two different lengths of validity: five and ten years. Japanese citizens up to 19 years of age can only be issued a five-year passport, while those who are 20 years of age or older can choose either a five-year (blue) or ten-year (red) passport for different registration fees.

Official passportEdit

Issued to members of the Diet and public servants.

Diplomatic passport:Edit

Issued to members of the Imperial Family, diplomats and their family members and government high-level officials.

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

In a foreign country, a passport is the only way that I almost can prove (nationality, name, age, etc.) and who one is. Therefore, in a foreign country, passport will be required in various places unlike when you are in the country. More specifically,

  • when the immigration, such as in airport
  • when you check in to a hotel
  • when using a (travel checks) travelers checks
  • when asked to present identification from such police officers
