Apply In-Person:

  1. Applicant has to approach the Register General Department in Ghana and applicant can get their application form for single status certificate contact link
  2. Applicant has to enter all information in the application form.
  3. Applicant must make sure to carry all necessary documents that are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page. (Both photocopies and originals)
  4. Please refer to the fees details in the “Fees” section of this page.
  5. Fill out the prescribed Declaration Form, attach the supporting document and submit them for verification.
  6. If the application is satisfied that all the conditions for filling the request are meeting, applicant will be notified and issued with the single status certificate.
  7. Generally, the processing time for this procedure is 3 months.


Printing out the certificate/request:

  1. Re-visit the RGD the home page by clicking the link below and log in link
  2.  On the RGD portal home page click on “service” tab, the Service page will be displayed.
  3. Click on“Generate e-certificate” link under e-shop, to save and print certificate and other supporting documents after approval is given.

  • If divorced, Decree Absolute.
  • If widowed, Death Certificate of previous spouse (and Marriage Certificate).
  • If applicants name has been changed by Deed Poll, proof is necessary.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • If the applicant is planning to marry in another country, you may be required to obtain a Certificate of Non-Impediment.
  • This document has many different names such as Declaration of Non-Impediment to Marry, Statutory Declaration of Single Status, Affidavit of Intended Marriage, Statement In-Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad, a Certificate of No Impediment, Certificate of Freedom to Marry or just free to marry.



Information which might helpEdit

Please also be aware that a standard Single Status Certificate or Certificate of No Impediment may be insufficient on its own to allow a marriage to take place in a foreign country. You may be required by the foreign authorities to comply with the following, so please ensure that you allow sufficient time for processing.

  • Certificates may need to be translated.
  • Certificates may need to be endorsed or exchanged for a locally acceptable version issued by your Embassy or Consulate in the country where you will marry.
  • Certificates may need to be legalized i.e. stamped with an official stamp known as an Apostle.
  • Certificates may require that witnesses swear an Affidavit stating that you are free to marry and that this is appended.
