Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Apply for Firearms (Guns) license and Import Permit in person, the applicant has to approach the Ghana ministry of interior department

3. Also, Information related to the MINT office and License authority can be obtained from the “Office locations and contacts” section of this page.
4. The applicant can collect the application Form from the office of the Ministry of the Interior.
5. Fill the forms with the right information to facilitate the process.
6. Fill in all the necessary details in the application and submit with supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section.
7. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
8. The Commission will review the application and all the submitted documents. This process takes averagely 2 to 3 months. Once the applicant meets all the requirements, the Commission will issue an invoice for the license fee to be paid. After payment is done, the Commission will proceed to issue the license accordingly.
9. The process takes two to three months. This is usually the case when the applicants present all the documents the right way.
10. If an application is rejected, the license fee shall be refunded back to the applicant.
11. On scrutinizing the application if the issuing officer is satisfied, he shall grant the new license to the applicant.

Required Documents

• Application letter addressed to the Hon. Minister, Ministry of the Interior, Accra
• 4 Passport sized photographs
• Attested copy of address proof: Voter Identity Card, Passport, Electricity/ Water/Telephone Bill, Driving License, Property (House) Tax, Tax Return, National identification Card.
• Attested copy of date of birth: Police clearance Certificate, Birth certificate, Affidavit sworn before a Magistrate/Notary stating date and place of birth by illiterate or semi-illiterate applicants.

Eligibility

The license authority shall refuse to grant a license:

• Where such license is required in respect of any prohibited arms or prohibited ammunition
• Where such is required by a person whom the licensing authority has reason to believe:
  • To be prohibited by the Indian Arms Rules or by any other law for the time being in force from acquiring, having in his possession or carrying any arms or ammunition.
  • To be of unsound mind.
  • To be for any reason unfit for a license.

Fees

• Processing fee – GH₵700 (to be paid after processing has been completed)

Validity

• Valid for a period of 5 years.

• While carrying a gun around with them in Ghana, the Foreigners have to be careful and must not issue their permit.
