Ghana - Apply For Extension of Research Permit

Apply In-Person:

  1. Applicant can obtain a Extension of Research Permit by applying to the Comptroller-General of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) office Contact link
  2. The Applicant has to approach the Ghana Immigration Service centre and the applicant can get their application form.
  3. Read carefully through the application form as there contain different section.
  4. The applicant has to make sure that he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
  5. This should be done at least three (3) months before the expiry of the permit.
  6. The research permit renewal application forms must be accompanied by the following:-
    • A comprehensive progress report and a justification for continuation of Project (two (2) copies).
    • A letter from the sponsor (two (2) copies)
    • A letter from the affiliating institutions supporting the application for renewal.
  7. Payment of a renewal fee to the GIS will be required before a research permit is renewed.
  8. Therefore make payments of renewal as required. Payment details have been given in the “Fees section” of this page.
  9. Attach the payment receipt to the application document before submission.
  10. Applicant should note that; a research permit may be renewed for a period not exceeding one year at any one time for short term projects of duration not exceeding 3 years, and two years for long term projects exceeding 3 years.
  11. Once the applicant has made the submission, wait for official communication from the Head of Research Division. The review process can take at least one month to complete.
  12. If the review is successful, the applicant will be granted with an extension for the applicant’s research.

EligibilityEdit

  • Students, Private individuals, Public Institutions or Private Institutions; either Ghanaian or Non-Ghanaian carrying out research in Ghana and are in need of an extension of their research period are eligible to make an application.
  • One should possess a valid/ expired research permit to apply for an extension.



FeesEdit

  • Student/Attachment/Undergraduate/Diploma - GHS.40,000
  • Research (Academic) Masters- GHS.400,000
  • Research (Academic) PhD- GHS.800,000
  • Research (Individual/Post-Doctoral) - GHS 200, 000
  • Research (Public/Private Institutions) - GHS.350,000
  • Research (Private Companies) - GHS 700,000
  • Projects that extend beyond the initial five (5) year period are required to pay $300 for the extension.
  • Ghanaian students are only required to pay a fee of GHS.50.



ValidityEdit

  • Permits are valid for the entire duration specified for a project. However, the fee covers a research period not to exceed five (5) years.

  • Applicant should make this application at least three (3) months before the expiry of the permit.
  • The GIS charges a non-refundable.
  • Get an endorsement for extension from affiliate institution.
  • Fill in required information and attach required documents.
  • Make payment for the research permit.
  • Submit filled application form, receipt and required documents for review and approval.
  • A completely filled application is only accepted.

  • The research permit is a necessary document for any individual who wants to do their research studies in Ghana.
  • Research extensions will enable the applicant to continue to carry out his/her research, once the validity of his/her research permit elapsed.
  • It’s illegal to undertake/ or continue undertaking research in Uganda without a valid research license.
