Procedure

1. You approach the driver license authority in your local area who will be able to get you an International Driver License.
2. If you already have a German driving license card, you get the international driver's license immediately.
3. If you are not a German driving license card, it takes about six weeks until you get the driving license card and can get the international driver's license at the same time.

Required Documents

1. ID card or passport
2. Biometric passport photo (2 photos if you need to apply for a driving license card first)
3. Current driving license
4. Only Altfhrerscheinen (gray or pink), which were not issued by the driving license authority in Munich flashcards copy which you can request from the authority by telephone that issued your driver's license. From there, the flashcards copy should be sent directly to the driving license authority.

Eligibility

• You should be registered with principal residence in Munich.
• You must have a driving license card issued in Germany

Fees

Validity

The International driver's license is valid up to three years, and must be re-applied afterwards. An extension is not possible. It applies only for trips abroad. In a driving ban of the International driving license must be proposed together with the national driver's license.

With a Foreign Driver License
If you have a foreign driver license and would like to apply for a International Driver License, you would have to approach the driver licensing authority 6 weeks before the of the requirement.
