Procedure

Couples married in France automatically receive a livret de famille. This is a booklet which serves as an official record of a marriage and subsequent events in the family such as births, deaths and divorce or name changes. These events are all recorded in the livret de famille and are known as (mentions marginales). In France, the livret de famille is an official document.

HOW TO APPLY

IN PERSON

1. Visit the Office of the Mayor (La Mairie) of the town where the marriage took place and request for marriage certificate application form which are in three forms i.e. the full copy, the extract with filiation and the extract without filiation.
2. Read through the instruction carefully and fill the form correctly.
3. Submit the filled application form with the required documents to the attending official who will verify the documents and if all the information is in order you will be issued with the livret de famille(if you don’t have one) if you have one it will be indicated on the marriage part, the same day.

VIA MAIL

1. Write A letter request for a marriage certificate and send to the Office of the Mayor (La Mairie) of the town where the marriage took place
2. Required information indicate on the mail

   Full copy or extract with filiation

   • Date of the marriage
   • Last name, first names of the spouse
   • Names and surnames of their parent

   Extract without filiation

   • Date of the marriage
   • Last name, first names of the spouse

3. The return enveloped with written address and stamp should be send together with the request letter.

VIA ONLINE

1. Service Public and click on access online service.
2. On the new page, Under reason for the request box select wedding and enter your postal code and town under municipal where the marriage was registered then click on button “Following” to proceed.
3. You will be relocated to the next page under (type of act) fill it correctly in accordance to the type of marriage certificate you are applying for i.e. (full copy, extract with filiation or extract without filiation)
4. You will then be redirected to the next page under (identification) fill it correctly then click on following
5. Than finally you will be redirected to the last page under (summary and send) verify all the information is correct then click on send.

• Identification documents prove for the spouses parents, guardian
• A livret de famille if you have one

Eligibility

Marriage certificate (Full copy and Extract with filiation)

• One of the spouses,
• an ascendant (parent, grandparent) of the spouses,
• a descendant (child, grandchild) major of the spouses,
• An authorized professional authorized to do so (lawyers, on behalf of their client for example).

Marriage certificate (extract without filiation)

• You can obtain a marriage certificate without filiation, without having to justify your request or your quality.

Need for the Document

• According to french laws, everybody is entitled to order a marriage certificate without the names of the parents. A marriage certificate with mention of the parents or a copy of the birth register may be ordered only by each one of the concerned spouses themselves, their ancestors (parents, grandparents etc.), their descendants (children, grand children etc.) and their heirs.

• French marriage certificates inform also about further events occurred later on in the life of the concerned persons, as divorce, separation, acquisition or loss of french nationality and death ("mentions marginales").
