France - Obtain a Birth Certificate

To obtain a complete copy of your birth certificate, you can:
- if you were born in France: contact the town of your place of birth, the request can be made on-line,
- if you were born abroad: contact the central service of the Registry Office: Service Central de lEtat Civil, 11 rue de la Maison Blanche, 44941 NANTES CEDEX 09, or at the consulate of your place of birth
- if you were born in the Overseas Communities, contact the Ministre de lOutre-mer, or the town hall of your place of birth or apply here for birth certificate pakistan
Write a letter to the Office of the Mayor (La Mairie) if you are a French citizen seeking a French birth certificate. Include your birth date, full name at birth, birth place and your parents' full names, including your mother's maiden name. Send your letter plus a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

Required DocumentsEdit
It is essential to provide a medical certificate of birth which will be given by the hospital or clinic where the birth took place. It is also recommended to provide:
- family book if there
- the birth of the father and the mother or the identification of both parents in the absence of the family book
- the birth of siblings of the newborn if necessary

EligibilityEdit
There are three different forms of french birth certificates:
- Birth Certificate without the parents' names of the child (Extrait d'acte de naissance sans filiation)
- Birth Certificate mentioning the parents of the child (Extrait d'acte de naissance avec filiation)
- Full and legalized copy of the birth register (Copie intgrale de l'acte de naissance)

A birth certificate may be obtained from the Office of the Mayor (La Mairie) at the place of birth. The request should be in French.
The request must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. There is no charge for a copy of a birth certificate.

Need for the DocumentEdit
According to French laws, everybody is entitled to order a birth certificate without the names of the parents. A birth certificate with mention of the parents or a copy of the birth register may be ordered only by the concerned person himself or herself, the ancestors (parents, grand parents etc.), the descendants (children, grand children etc.) and the spouse (wife or husband).
French birth certificates inform also about further events occurred later on in the life of the concerned person, as marriage, divorce, separation, acquisition or loss of French nationality and death ("mentions marginales").

- The complete copy of the birth certificate is the exact copy of your birth certificate as it was written on the birth register of the town where you were born.
- This copy shows all the changes that happened to you in your civil status (marriage, divorce, naturalisation, change or name, PACS, etc). This copy also allows you, in most cases, to prove your nationality.
- Please note that the complete copy means the original document and not its photocopy.
- You must bring this document with any request for ID card or passport.
