ProcedureEdit

  1. Go to a police department to apply for an identity card.
  2. Complete the application form.
  3. Prove your identity and submit a passport photo.
  4. Pay the application fee.

Note:
Finland has introduced new guidelines for passport photos. The aim of these requirements is to standardize passport photos and improve the verification of passport holders identities. Need for the DocumentEdit

An application for identity card is always done in writing form with the police. You can submit your application for an identity card at any police license services point.



Information which might helpEdit

Before you can get your identity card, a PIN envelope will be posted to your home address containing the PIN and PUK codes for your card. Once it is ready, you can collect it at the police department. It can also be collected by your authorized representative or posted to your home address on request. You will pay the postage together with the fee for the identity card.



Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

An identity card can also be used as a travel document instead of a passport. An identity card can be used as a travel document replacing the passport in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
