Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for obtaining a Non-Governmental Organization Certificate is available in the Ministry of Justice, Ethiopia contact link
2. Applicant should fill-in all the necessary details in application form provided by the ministry.
3. Applicant should make sure to carry all the documents that are mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
4. Fee of $94.80 for each of the four documents (totally $379.20).
5. Applicant must attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form while submitting.
6. Originals might be collected by the authorities for verification purposes.
7. The collected originals will be returned to the applicant right after verification.
8. Applicant can get their certificate within 3 months. It can be sent via post or the applicant can get it by visiting the Ministry directly.
9. If the certificate wasn’t issued within 3 months, then, the applicant can visit the Ministry to know the details of their application.

• The NGO must be a non-profitable organization.
• The registrar holds the power to cancel the registration of the NGO for any reason.

Need for the Document

• A non-governmental organization (NGO) is any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group is organized on a local, national or international level. All NGOs are registered by NGO coordination Board under the Corporate Affairs Commission Coordination Act.
• The incorporation of non-profit bodies in Ethiopia is governed by the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2004 (the Act). Both foreign and local NGOs can be established in Ethiopia
• The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has branches in most State capitals of the Federation and it’s headquarter is based in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Before applying to the CAC for incorporation of a non-profit body, one must check that the name of the new entity is not already in use. This can be done by purchasing an Availability Form, which costs very little.
• According to the Non-Governmental Organization Registration Act all NGOs are required to apply for permits before they can be allowed to operate in Nigeria.
• In order for a Non Government Organization to be registered in Nigeria, the application should be submitted through the Charitable Trusts Act to the Registrar of Titles in Nigeria.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

This certificate can help the NGOs to get worldwide donations for their activities legally.
