Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for obtaining original Identification card is available in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia contact link
2. Applicant must fill-in all the necessary details in the application form.
3. Applicant must make sure to carry documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
4. Applicant must attach the photocopies of the documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
5. Payments of $200 in the form of Money order or cashier’s check or certified bank check that will be paid to the Embassy of Ethiopia.
6. Take fingerprint of the applicant (both original and photocopy).
7. This procedure can be completed within 7-30 days.
8. If the ID card has not been issued to the applicant within a month, then the applicant has to visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to know the details of their application.

Required Documents

• Two copies of valid passport from the country of naturalization.
• Two copies of Supporting documents showing Ethiopian Origin
• Two copies of Old Ethiopian passport (please make sure to attach the pages which shows your names, your picture, date of issue and the expiry date of the passport); or
• Two copies of Birth certificate which is authenticated through Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; or
• Two copies of your parent (Father/Mother) Ethiopian passport or Ethiopian Keble ID card; or
• Two copies of document showing that you are the legal inheritor authenticated by the concerned authority; or
• Two copies of adoption document. The document should be authenticated by the concerned authority; or
• Two copies of court document showing Ethiopian origin. The document should be authenticated; or
• Two copies of your relatives (brother or sister) Ethiopian passport or Ethiopian Keble ID card; or others testimony document which is given by three Ethiopians or Ethiopian by birth.

Eligibility

• There is no age limit to apply for an original Identification card.
• Anyone in Ethiopia who is willing to get an Identification card is eligible.
  

Fees

Fee of $200 must be paid for this process to complete.

Validity

Original Identification card is valid for a period of 5 years.

Instructions

Applicants must bring documents to the license branch to prove their identity. Foreigners are required to have a Secure ID and must present full documentation to apply for a renewal or replacement of their existing driver’s license, permit, or identification card.

• Name
• Date and place of birth
• Religious affiliation
• Linguistic cultural belongings
• Gender
• Ethnicity
• Proof of name and date of birth, for example, a certified birth certificate, valid passport or certificate of naturalization. Verification
• Proof of identity (usually a document with a signature or photo).
• Proof of residency.
• Proof of citizenship, legal permanent resident status, legal conditional resident status or legal temporary visitor status * your social security number.
  

Need for the Document

If you have held a driver license in the past eight years and now wish to apply for an original ID card, you would only be required to provide proof of identity upon application for your ID card.

Information which might help

• Finger print is mandatory to have an Ethiopian Origin ID Card. But those who have already submitted their finger prints upon receipt of an electronic ID card earlier are not required to submit their finger prints again.
• People with an Original Identification Card don’t have to apply for a visa.
