Ethiopia - Applying for a Temporary Residence or Movement Permit

Apply In-Person:
- The application form for getting a permit for the above-mentioned procedure is available in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia contact link
- To apply for a temporary residence, the applicant must have a work permit or immigrant visa in Ethiopia.
- The applicant must carry all the documents that are mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both Photocopies and Originals).
- The applicant should attach the photocopies of the documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
- The amount to be paid as a fee for getting a temporary permit is 400 Ethiopian Birr (for non-students) and 200 Ethiopian Birr (for students).
- If the applicant followed all of the above-mentioned procedure properly, then, the permit will be issued to the applicant within 7 to 20 days.
- If the applicant didn’t get the permit within a month, then, they can visit the office to know the status of their application.

- If the applicant is already a user, they can login directly with their registered mobile number and Password.
- If the applicant is a new user, then, they have to register first by clicking on the “Register” button and providing all information that are necessary for registration process.
- Finally, they have to click on the “Register” button for completing the registration.
- If the registration is successful, applicant can login using their “Mobile Number” and “Password”.
- Applicant must provide necessary information in the application form.
- Applicant must upload the digital copies of the documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- Please Fill the Request Form Properly in order to submit your service request application. Fields marked with ‘astrics (*)’ sign are mandatory information that should be provided by you to process your application by selected service provider.
- If you wish to pause your application request process and continue later, your can do so by saving your application as a Draft and Resume it later from Draft Applications Section.
- After you Submit your Service Request Application, you will be provided with a unique Tracking Number and Service provider branch that will process your service request.
- This information will also be sent to your email address you provided at registration time. With your tracking number, you can follow up the progress of your application on Track My Application Section.
- You can only apply for the Same Service Request once. Only after the completion of existing Service request, you can reapply to the Service again.
- Case worker who handled your service Request may contact you for further information regarding your application.
- You can reply for case worker inquires on Messages Section. Depending on you requested service business process, you may also be asked to fill other forms to process your application further on Correspondence Section.
- For Service requests that requires a physical presence a as a part of business process (Example: Payment, hard print document verifications, Document Pickup), you will be asked to reserve appointment time On Appointment Section.
- Once you complete your reservation, the provider will reserve the time and service counter for you. You can’t change your reservation time, so make sure you will be at reserved service counter before 10 minutes of reservation time.

EligibilityEdit
- Any foreigner who is residing in Ethiopia.
- Any foreigner who enters Ethiopia with an immigrant visa with in thirty days of his arrival.
- Any foreigner who enters Ethiopia with a business or student visa and intends to stay for more than ninety days with in thirty days from the date of his arrival.
- Any foreigner who is allowed to stay without a visa and who intends to stay for more than ninety days, within 30 days of his arrival.
- Diplomats and international civil servants their families, refugees recognized by the government of Ethiopia and the UNHCR and foreigners exempted from registration and residence permit in accordance with other laws or treaties to which Ethiopia is a party are not required and register.

The amount paid to earn a temporary permit is 400 Ethiopia birr for non students and 200 Ethiopia birr for students.
ValidityEdit
This permit shall only be valid for a period not exceeding one year from the date of issuance.

InstructionsEdit
- Any visitor intending to take up work or residence in Ethiopia must have a resident permit from the Department of Immigration in the Ministry of the Interior.
- Travelers must apply for this permit within the first 30 days of their stay in Ethiopia and must not work until this permit is approved.
- The Ethiopian Investment Agency is delegated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs to issue work permits for persons to be employed by a private investor.
- Foreigners are obliged to present residence permit and identity card or travel documents whenever required by authorities.

Need for the DocumentEdit
A temporary residence permit will be issued to any foreigner who has been registered lawfully and who is not entitled to a permanent residence permit. For any foreigner to acquire a residence permit, must first be registered at the Security Immigration and Refugee Affairs Authority. During registration, the applicant is required to provide a valid travel document, reason for residing and other information and documents as may be required.

- Business travelers or employees of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who intend to stay for 90 days or more must apply for a residence card/work permit in order to continue working and living in Ethiopia.
- Travelers must apply for this permit within the first 30 days of their stay in Ethiopia and must not work until this permit is approved.
- Travelers should check with their sponsoring organization to ensure they have the correct documentation in place, or risk penalties, including detention, fines, and deportation.
- The Government of Ethiopia’s regulations also allow for similar penalties for those who assist others to reside illegally in Ethiopia.
