Estonia - Apply for Weapons Permit
ProcedureEdit
- Before you will be able to buy a weapon, you'll need to secure first an acquisition permit.
- Application for the acquisition permit shall be submitted to a local Police prefecture.
- The Application must indicate the type of weapons to be purchased, its purpose and place where it will be stored.
- The weapon shall be submitted for registration accompanied by an acquisition permit on which the seller of the weapon has listed the specifications for the purchased weapon.
- Before receiving the firearms permit, an examination must be passed.
- Weapons permit will be issued after registration of the weapon with the Police authority.
- The state fee must be paid before the permit is issued.
Note: Before applying to the prefecture, it would be useful to get acquainted with circumstances excluding issuing of weapons acquisition permit and weapons permit stipulated in the Weapons Act.

- Hunting certificate (if weapon will be acquired for hunting)
- Document proving membership of a sports organization (if weapon will be acquired for dealing with sports)

EligibilityEdit
- Weapons may be acquired by citizens of the Republic of Estonia or by aliens who hold a valid Estonian residence permit or who are residing in Estonia on the basis of the right of residence. Weapons may be acquired since 18 years of age, by some types of weapons as of 21 years of age.
- Physical persons are permitted to acquire, hold and possess weapons for hunting, self-defence and protection of property, dealing with sports, professional activities and collection.
- A permit to carry a weapon can be applied for by a legal person as the owner of the weapon with the local prefecture of the residence.

ValidityEdit
- The acquisition permit shall be valid for three months of the day on which it was issued. The permit may be extended by three additional months. The holder of the permit is obliged to report any loss or destruction of the permit promptly to the police prefecture.
- The weapons permit shall be valid for five years.

The person acquiring a weapon is obliged to register the weapon within seven business days. Applications for registration are submitted to the local Police prefecture.

Weapons may be acquired by citizens of the Republic of Estonia or by aliens who hold a valid Estonian residence permit or who are residing in Estonia on the basis of the right of residence.
Holding and possessing weapons used for hunting, self-defense and protection of property, dealing with sports, professional activities and as part of a collection are allowed by the Estonian government. The owner must secure a Weapons Permit for the weapons in his possession.

Ordinary citizens have the right to own a civilian weapon intended for hunting, relevant sporting activities, self-defence and property protection, professional activity and gun collecting. A distinction is drawn between weapons and ammunition in unrestricted commerce and those in restricted commerce.
Weapons in restricted commerce
Persons under 18 years of age may not acquire, own, possess, carry, store or convey weapons in unrestricted commerce or ammunition for such weapons. Weapons in unrestricted civil commerce shall not be entered into the register of service and civilian weapons.
Weapons in unrestricted commerce are:
- gas spray;
- pneumatic weapons of a calibre of up to 4.5 mm (inclusive);
- hunting knives;
- diving knives;
- fencing weapons for sport (pe, espadon, foil, etc.);
- cut-and-thrust weapons related to historical tradition in culture, martial arts or #sports (sword, dagger, rapier, etc.) or copies thereof;
- crossbows requiring a draw force of up to 75 kg (inclusive);
- sporting bows requiring a draw force of up to 45 kg (inclusive);
- underwater weapons.
Weapons specified in clauses 2 and 4-9 of this section may be possessed, carried, stored or conveyed by persons who engage in corresponding sports and have attained at least ten years of age.
Weapons in restricted commerce are:
- gas weapons;
- pneumatic weapons;
- projectile weans;
- cut-and-thrust weapons;
- firearms.
