Procedure

How to Apply
Apply In-Person

1. Applicants should visit the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Regional or District Immigration Offices and Botswana Missions Abroad, for the Registration as a Citizen of Botswana to his Excellency application process {address details provided below}.
2. Collect and submit the completed Form R “Declaration of Renunciation/Abandonment of Citizenship of Botswana” attach the supporting document {as listed below under required document section below} to be verified by the attending staff at the immigration office or mission abroad.
3. Pay the processing application fee at the immigration/mission abroad office and obtain an acknowledgment letter.
4. All application file will then be forwarded to the Department of immigration and Citizenship office in Botswana for evaluation and processing.
5. If your application is successful, a letter renunciation will be sent to you by mail or issued in person at the immigration office/mission abroad against the acknowledgment slip.
6. After receipt of the renunciation letter, applicant will be required to surrender all Botswana government official documents {National identity card, driver’s license, Passport} that he/she holds immediately to the nearest Immigration Offices or Mission.

Required Documents

• Two (2) recent colored passport size photos
• Complete a Certificate of Origin form obtained from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship
• Proof of citizenship from another country
• Police report from foreign country with the applicant’s finger prints
• Certified copy of birth certificate or affidavit in lieu of birth certificate
• Certified copy of parent’s citizenship status

Eligibility

Citizens of Botswana who meet the following criteria qualify for the service:

• Has acquired citizenship of another country
• Must be over 21 years of age

Fees

• The processing fee is BWP 10.00.

Need for the Document

• Citizens of Botswana who wish to renounce their citizenship voluntary due to reasons of dual citizenship or attain other nationality can submit an official request to the Government through the immigration officer or Botswana mission abroad for processing and de-register from the national civil registry as a Botswana citizen and obtain a renunciation letter.
