Apply In-Person

  1. The holder of a mining license may apply to the Department of Mine for the renewal of his license at any time not later than one year before the expiry of the current license. Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology, and Energy Security Office Location & Contact Details
  2. The application shall be made in writing using a prescribed form, Mining Licence Application Form (Renewal) obtainable at any of the Department of mine office or download it directly using this link: Mining Licence Application Form (Renewal)
  3. The duly completed form attached to the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page should be submitted to the Department of Mine offices for consideration and processing.
  4. Upon receipt of the application, the receiving officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
  5. Applicants are issued with an acknowledgment letter as a proof of submission of the application file and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  6. The Mine Department office may request additional information relevant to the application. In such a case, the information must be submitted within the stipulated time from the date of notification. Where the applicant fails to submit the required information, the application shall be rejected.
  7. After the document evaluation phase has been completed satisfactorily, the Minister shall cause the applicant to be notified in writing of his decision on the application and, if the renewal of the Mining Licence is refused, the Minister shall give reasons for such refusal within thirty (30) working days of submission of the application.
  8. If approved, processed to the Department of mine office and collect the renewed mining license against the approval letter, identification document, and upon payment of all applicable fees.
  9. An annual lease rental fee is charged at BWP 100.00 per square kilometer, the first annual lease is paid on receiving the mining license and then paid annually on the anniversary of the license.

    • Details of mineral deposit (including all known inferred, indicated, measured resources and probable and proven reserves)
    • Annual production rates
    • Estimated recovery rates
    • Nature of product
    • Annual sales volumes or tonnages
    • Forecast of capital investment and cash flow
    • Employment projections and skills development plan
    • Projections of the value of local procurement
    • Environmental Management Plan including Closure Plan
  • Proposed rehabilitation program.
  • Letter of surface rights from the land authority or landowner with a stamped sketch plan showing coordinates.
  • Letter of authorization for Environmental Impact Assessment from the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA).
  • Letter of authorization Archaeological Clearance with location coordinates from Department of National Museum and Monuments (DNMM).
  • If applying within a conservation area, clearance from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.
  • Copy of valid prospecting license, or retention license, or a prospecting waiver.
  • Disclose any other information material relevant to the application

EligibilityEdit

  • Holders of a valid Mining license
  • Additionally, the Company has:
    • Established domicilium citandi et executandi in Botswana.
    • Incorporated under the Company Act and carries business of mining under the license.
    • Not been in liquidation or under judicial management, except where such liquidation or judicial management is part of a scheme for reconstruction or amalgamation of such company.
    • None of the Directors or Shareholders are disqualified as an individual under the above requirements of an individual.


FeesEdit

ValidityEdit

  • A renewed mining license shall be valid for such period, not exceeding 25 years, as is reasonably required to carry out the mining program, unless suspended, revoked, or canceled by the Authority.
  • The license should be renewed, not later than one year before the expiry of the current license.
